| This is obscene -- while millions of us in Europe will struggle to heat our homes this winter, energy companies are cashing in on BILLIONS in extra profits. It's total madness! But in days, energy ministers are meeting to consider taxing these obscene profits and giving the money back to European citizens. Join our call to make polluters pay so we can heat our homes and fight the climate crisis - and we will welcome negotiators with hard-hitting ads ahead of the vote! | | | Dear friends, | As millions of European households struggle to pay their electric bills, the world's largest energy companies are cashing out $2600 every second, reporting record-breaking benefits. But in a few days, that could change.
With winter coming and gas prices expected to double before the end of the year, the European Commission is rushing a proposal to tax the energy giants' obscene profits channeling those funds straight back to consumers. And some European countries are already advocating to go even further by taxing all financial institutions – using their immense earnings to fast-track a green transition, leaving behind soaring oil and gas prices entirely.
EU Energy Ministers will meet in a few days to discuss the measure. So join the global petition urging Europe to tax the super-rich so we can heat our homes. When we hit 1 million, Avaaz will welcome them by wallpapering the Commission with thousands of electric bills from EU consumers to mount the pressure. | | | The current energy crisis is expected to hit millions of European households, as the worst is yet to come. According to energy experts, the current gas price, now at $3100 per 1000 cubic meters in mid-August (a 610% increase over the same time last year), could increase to $5000 per 1000 cubic meters at the end of the year.
The EU windfall tax is foreseen to raise €140bn from energy companies' profits to soften the blow of record-high prices and boost investment in renewables.
In times of crisis, we all should stand together. Right now, millions of European citizens are condemned to energy poverty, while big companies are profiting from the war in Ukraine to put a cash bonanza in their pockets. Enough! Let's ramp up the pressure and get energy ministers to support this powerful idea! | | With hope and determination,
