Dear friends,
More than 120 women at garment factories in Lesotho say they were sexually abused by their supervisors. Some say they were raped at their factory premises.

These women are not alone. 80% of garment workers surveyed in Bangladesh have experienced or witnessed sexual violence and harassment at work. So have millions of women worldwide.

But, in weeks -- we can help bring to life a groundbreaking treaty that could protect women everywhere from workplace violence!

6 countries have ratified it, but we need more to bring it into law worldwide. So, let's take our call directly to champion countries, such as Spain, Argentina and Ecuador, ahead of a major global summit on women's rights, and help ring the alarm across the world. Sign now!
Around 1 in 4 countries have NO laws covering sexual harassment in work. And those that do, don't always work. In France -- 30% of women say they've been sexually harassed or assaulted at work, demonstrating the need for reforms!

But this treaty could be a game changer. For the first time, countries would be required to develop national laws prohibiting workplace violence, take preventative measures, and ensure survivors have access to remedies. Coupled with bold, domestic reforms, it could change the lives of women across the globe.

And, insiders say now is the time to get more states onboard! World leaders are about to meet at a huge summit in France and champion countries are ready to back the call. So, let's get to 1 million signatures and deliver our voices directly to them. Sign and share now!
Stories of sexual violence and assault can make us feel powerless, but this is something we can do right now to better protect women all across the world. We're standing on the shoulders of generations of women and allies who fought for this - let's make them proud.

With hope and fierce determination,

Sarah, Ruth, Naxalli, Chris, Nana, Adela, and the whole Avaaz team

Caring for Community

Dear Friends & Listeners,

Today we write to share from the heart. Our longtime friend and collaborator Jason Candler has suffered a severe brain injury. Jason has worked with us a recordist, sound engineer, musician and producer for almost two decades. Some of you will know him as a sax player in the Hungry March Band, others as the incredibly deft hand (and ear) that built the podcast so many of you enjoy each week. He is generally known as real New York Cat, riding around on his bike with his horn on his back.  He is also the partner of a wonderful woman named Lily and an 18 month old son, Jakob.  Lily came to NYC  just a few years ago from China and has swiftly learned way too much about our insane medical system.

Each day Jason embarks on his Olympian effort to regain the use of his left side. He is in a long healing process and is showing incredible strength and plasticity in the mind.

Some of you may have noticed a change in the podcast and a few reposts of old shows as we adjust to his absence. We really miss working with Jason but obviously what is critical now is his healing and recovery. We are reaching out for your support.

It may be sometime before he can work again. If you are able please make a donation to a support fund please do so. Any amount is appreciated.

We will keep you apprised of Jason's recovery, every step feels like a miracle to those of us who have been lucky enough to know and work with him over the years.

LISTEN  to Jason's work here. LISTEN TO REVEREND BILLY RADIO HERE

Also if you live in NYC, we will be beside the Gowanus Canal this Sunday, May 23 at 3:30 to talk about gentrification, bio-diversity and everything else with Voices of Gowanus activists and community members on the Union St. Bridge in Brooklyn. Join Us!

with thanks, Savitri

Israel I Palestine

Dear friends,
Israel and Palestine are on the brink of a full scale war.

16 Palestinian children have already been killed. Mothers murdered. Hundreds injured.

The tensions are escalating. Fast.

It all relates to decades of Israel's violent oppression of the Palestinian people, which Human Rights Watch just concluded is amounting to "crimes against humanity."

It's where it all began, and it's where it must end.

Possibly the only way to stop this horrific cycle of Israel violently displacing Palestinians from their homes, the daily collective punishment of innocent families, Hamas firing rockets, and Israel bombing Gaza is to make the economic cost of this conflict too high to bear.

It's what helped end apartheid in South Africa, and it can end apartheid here.

We are almost at 2 million signatures. Click below to sign our call to sanction Israel for committing crimes against humanity, and turn the calculation of the extremists profiting from this hell upside down:
Human Rights Watch, one of the most respected human rights organisations in the world, and B'tselem, the most respected Israeli human rights organisation, both recently concluded that Israel is committing crimes against humanity against Palestinian people.

Meanwhile, extremist Israeli settlers march in the streets chanting "Death to Arabs", and have burned thousands of olive trees that many Palestinians rely on to survive. A member of the Israeli parliament has even demanded for Palestinian women to be discriminated against in maternity wards, so they don't give birth in the same rooms as Jewish women!

This is a vicious downward spiral.

The Palestinian people are not perfect. They have made many painful mistakes in their struggle for freedom. Extremists and corrupt leaders benefit from the status quo. But there is no question that the Israeli government, with the fourth strongest military in the world, is the actor with maximum power on the ground. Israel controls the land, air, water, food, and even the freedom of movement of ALL Palestinians. For 70 years, it has been punishing, evicting and discriminating against millions of Palestinians whose lives it controls.

The Israeli government believes it has a green light to continue committing these crimes, and crushing Palestinians -- because it believes it can block people around the world from pushing their governments to impose sanctions. Let's prove them wrong by turning this petition into a massive people's movement that no decision maker can ignore. Add your voice and pass this on, now:
Virtually every other tool has been tried, for decades, to encourage the Israeli government to stop denying Palestinians their rights, and they just keep treating them worse. Targeted sanctions, covering things like Israeli blood diamonds, a boycott on arms sales (Israel sells weapons to some of the world's most brutal regimes) as well tech and cultural sanctions (like banning Israel from sporting events and the Eurovision song contest) may finally bring down Israel's apartheid regime.

With hope and determination,

Fadi, Marie, Christoph, Mo, Nax, John, Risalat, and the entire Avaaz team

PS: Israel's many enablers will knee-jerk accuse Avaaz and our many Jewish staff and leadership of hating Jews. But our team and our members love the Jewish people, as we love all people. Even beyond the Holocaust, the Jewish community has long been horrifically oppressed and still faces anti-Semitism worldwide. This campaign is not about identity politics, or about Jews versus Muslims. It is about protecting basic human rights and equality, to ensure that the international community is not complicit in the decades long systematic oppression by the Israeli government of the Palestinian people. The goal is to achieve freedom and peace for ALL people in the region. Sanctions are necessary to push for this goal because the Israeli government continues to profit from the status quo.
