[AGA-Nieuws] Justice for Sammy - Murdered by the Amsterdam Police! DEMO!

Justice for Sammy - Murdered by the Amsterdam Police

On the 13th of August 2020 the 23 year old German tourist Sammy Baker
was murdered by the Amsterdam police. Sammy was in Amsterdam to
celebrate his birthday with friends but disappeared. His mother reported
him missing and came to Amsterdam to look for her son. She found him in
a confused state of mind and asked a police officer for help. The
officer called in his colleagues. What followed was not help, but three
bullets that killed Sammy. During the police action there were no
bystanders nearby. Sammy was only a threat to himself.

In May the state prosecutor, Anne Marie Ruijs, decided that the cops who
murdered Sammy will face no consequences. Ruijs ruled that there will
not be any legal procedure against them. Once again, cops get away with
murder in the Netherlands. Despite all the lies of the Amsterdam police
there is overwhelming evidence that Sammy was murdered (including a
video clearly showing what happened). Sammy was a person of colour who
was having a psychosis. Even while there was psychological help and his
mother at the scene the police refused Sammy the help he was asking.
Instead, they launched an attack on Sammy, without any reason, and shot
at him 4 times.

The police are getting away with excessive violence more and more
frequently. Instead of tackling this trend their power is increased with
more weapons and instructions to use brute force more quickly.

Walk with us for justice!

On friday 13th of august 2021 at 7.30 pm, a demonstration march will
take place from the starting point of Dam square in Amsterdam.
We want to draw attention to the police violence in the Netherlands, but
also to the injustice that has unfortunately happened to Sammy.
The demonstration is expected to end in the Honselerdijikstraat. There
will also be press present.

We will not remain silent! No one is forgotten.

NO JUSTICE - NO PEACE.

"You paid for this" tax the mega rich

"You paid for this" — that's what Jeff Bezos, the richest man in the world, told his employees as he went off to space in a trip that cost $2.5 million per minute. Dear friends,
"You paid for this" — that's what Jeff Bezos, the richest man in the world, told his employees as he went off to space in a trip that cost $2.5 million per minute!

This is not a sign of progress -- it's a statement of how inequality shot up with the pandemic.

While our precious Earth is burning, ice caps are melting and people are struggling in a way we have not seen since the Great Depression, the super rich are getting richer while paying almost $0 in taxes with the blessing of our governments.

We must end this! If they have money to play with rocket ships, they certainly should have it to pay their taxes!

Let's call them out now -- while Bezos and the world's super rich are under the spotlight, millions of us can urge our government to do the right thing, and tax the mega rich:
Of course space exploration matters, especially for scientific purposes. For example, it was pivotal to climate studies! And the more we see ourselves from a distance, the more we may realize we are small, fragile and in need of urgent protection. But that's not what Bezos and his cronies are doing. They are continuing to carve out a special path for the super rich, even considering the places they will escape to when Earth gets unlivable. That's not noble, it's disgraceful.

By making sure the super rich are paying their fair share of taxes, like any of us do, we could transform our global society: and direct billions to pay for all kids to be in school, ensure the whole world is vaccinated against Covid, support vulnerable countries to help mitigate the climate and biodiversity loss crisis and so much more.

But this money is partly not available simply because we do not have equitable corporate or wealth tax -- and billionaires keep using loopholes to protect their wealth. We can't allow our governments to turn a blind eye to that anymore.

Right now, Jeff Bezos, Richard Branson and many others are getting massive media attention for their space tourism trips -- and this is how we bring them down to Earth! Sign the petition and share with everyone:
Famous astronomer and scientist Carl Sagan once said:

"It has been said that astronomy is a humbling and character-building experience. There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another, and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we've ever known."

In a certain way, that is what the Avaaz community has been doing for the past 15 years. We're fighting for the pale blue dot, our Earth, our only home. Let's take that inspiration and use it to pressure these space explorers to do the right thing.

With hope and deeply inspired by this community,

Diego, Marta, Chris, Nell, Alice and the rest of the Avaaz team

The last generation - do something about climate change

Dear friends, This isn't global warming anymore. It's global scorching. Our world is hotter now than any time in recorded history, unleashing a firestorm of heatwaves, megadroughts, and acidifying seas. We are shattering the temple of life, with a million species on the edge of extinction.Within 50 years, 1.5 billion people could be forced to flee temperatures as hot as the Sahara desert -- already 20 million are forced to run every year. We're living through one of the greatest upheavals of life on earth, and it's caused by a global rise of just 1°C. We're on track for 3°C. Just imagine the hostile and desolate planet our children will inherit. But here's the most important bit: We CAN still turn this around -- we may be the last generation who can. The next five months are critical.World leaders will hold two major UN summits, where momentous decisions on the climate and extinction crisis must be made. It could change everything -- or nothing. It means we only have 150 days to shake our leaders into action, radically grow our team to overpower the fossil fuel army, supercharge massive marches, and get the world behind our courageous plan to save nature.Earth can't wait anymore. This is one of the most important times to be alive on this fragile planet, because it all hangs in the balance. We have to give it everything we've got, and just a small weekly donation from each of us will make an almighty difference. If you've ever thought of donating, do it now and let's fight for the future of our world:
Hi! We're seeing deadly new heatwaves and torrential floods battering the planet again this week -- an urgent reminder of how serious our battle to save our planet has become. We rarely resend emails like this, but Earth is facing an emergency, and this work is absolutely critical. Our movement is 100% funded by citizens like you -- chip in using the buttons below. And if a weekly contribution isn't possible, you can make a single donation here. Thank you!

Take Action Now!

This isn't global warming anymore. It's global scorching.

I'LL DONATE €1 WEEKLY
I'LL DONATE €2 WEEKLY
I'LL DONATE €3 WEEKLY
OTHER AMOUNT

The UN Biodiversity Summit will happen in October, and aims to end the extinction crisis with bold new protections for nature. And then just a few weeks later, the global Climate Summit is our best chance to secure new commitments to avoid a climate catastrophe.

It will not be easy, but there is reason to hope.

Almost all the world's biggest economies have now pledged to end carbon pollution by 2050 -- and the pandemic has shown that bold, systemic changes can happen far quicker than anyone dreamed. Humanity is learning that everything on our beautiful planet is intimately connected.

But this is an emergency and pledges aren't enough. We need real, decisive action -- and that will take absolutely everything we've got over the next 5 months. Here's the plan:
  • We'll massively scale up our team of media and policy experts, researchers, and organisers to pressure governments to sign a bold new deal to save nature;
  • We'll bring brave indigenous leaders to the summits, ensuring their urgent call to protect life-giving ecosystems is heard loud and clear;
  • We'll publish bombshell reports and shine a glaring media spotlight on the shady lobbying tactics of the fossil fuel giants; and
  • We'll help organise historic marches, ensuring our leaders know the world is watching.
The threats we face are no longer just serious; they are a matter of survival. We can't miss this moment: Earth needs a powerful voice as leaders decide the future. A tiny regular donation will make an incredible difference to what we can do together -- chip in now so we can be deafening:
I'LL DONATE €1 WEEKLY
I'LL DONATE €2 WEEKLY
I'LL DONATE €3 WEEKLY

In the battle to save our world, there is no certainty; only opportunity. And together, our years of marching, protesting, and advocacy have helped create the golden opportunities ahead. Together, we are changing the world -- and I am now more hopeful than I've been in a very long time. And hope is power. The power to rise and fight and charge like never before. Because it's clear that when we come together, all 66 million of us, our movement is capable of the most extraordinary things. This moment demands nothing less.

With fierce hope and determination, always,

Huiting, Mike, Chris, Marigona, Adela, Fra, Camille, Alis, Mouhamad, Bert and the whole team at Avaaz

PS. This might be your first donation to our movement ever. But what a first donation! Did you know that Avaaz relies entirely on small donations from members like you? That's why we're fully independent, nimble and effective. Join the over 1 million people who've donated to make Avaaz a real force for good in the world.

Dear friends,
"I have blood on my hands"

That's how Sophie Zhang, a former Facebook data scientist, described her work for the platform.

She saw how people were massacred in Myanmar and died in Bolivia in protests spurred in part by lies and manipulation on Facebook. She was outraged that Facebook was allowing dictators and unscrupulous politicians to mislead their citizens, rig elections, justify attacks on opponents, and incite deadly violence using fake accounts.

"Perhaps they thought they were clever; the truth was, we simply didn't care enough to stop them."

Enough is enough!

The next few weeks might be our last chance to hold Facebook and other big tech giants to account in the country where they're headquartered. President Biden promised to defend truth, and is considering how to rein in the Tech giants -- but the window to act is closing fast. If enough of us speak up, Avaaz will deliver our voices directly to the White House to pressure  Biden to set a clear agenda for Congress to regulate social media. Sign and share everywhere:

By turning a blind eye to political manipulation campaigns across the world, giant companies like Facebook have allowed political instability and polarization to flourish because they didn't think it would hurt their bottom line. But it hurt the people

This is not just an online issue, it has bloody real-life consequences: Zhang watched 9 people die in deadly clashes inflamed by the fake online activity that she had detected - and was told to 'de-prioritize'. As the harms became undeniable, Facebook's CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, started calling for regulation on his terms, while mounting a behind-the-scenes effort to deny responsibility for his inaction.

Accountability for the world starts with regulation in the US, where social media companies are headquartered. And only President Biden has the political power to tell Congress that we need legislation built to defend democracy from Big Tech, in order to start building a safer online environment for all while protecting freedom of expression.

Let's make him hear the from whole world our unified call for digital accountability:
Avaaz has guarded democracies from disinformation all over the world.  We've unveiled disinformation networks that reached billions of views, attacking elections in Brazil, the EU, and the U.S. We've documented hate speech and extremism in India, shown how Facebook helped make the invasion of the Capitol possible, and blown the whistle on the platforms' inability to contain disinformation about COVID-19. We've pushed reluctant social media platforms to adopt partial measures, but only regulation will get us the rest of the way. Let's win this together!

With hope and determination,

Nate, Laura, Liliana, Christoph, Luis and the whole Avaaz team.
