Amazon collapse? Sign Petition at least!

…for defending the forest. My mother and I were held for hours by cattle ranchers that invaded our Indigenous lands…
SIGN NOW
I was just held hostage for speaking out to save the Amazon -- but I will not stay quiet. Because the Amazon is dying and she needs us more than ever. Eight presidents from Amazon countries are about to gather to decide the future of this essential rainforest. This is a once-in-a-generation chance to win key protections and avert ecological collapse. Sign now and I will deliver our voices straight to the negotiations:

Dear friends,
I was afraid they would kill me -- the fifty cattle ranchers  who emerged from the trees, machetes in hand. They saw me as their enemy because I have dedicated my life to protecting the forest -- but I am fighting for them too.

The Amazon, where my people have lived for more than 6,000 years, is close to an ecological breaking point that will turn the forest into a desert wasteland.

If we don't avert this collapse, it will flood the atmosphere with CO2, parch the Earth, and condemn up to 10,000 species to extinction. And all of us -- Indigenous peoples, ranchers, people across Brazil and the world -- will struggle to survive.

But a window of opportunity remains.

Eight heads of state of the Amazonian countries are gathering for a historic summit, and it's a once-in-a-generation chance to save the rainforest -- if we can massively pressure leaders to protect at least 80% of the forest and fully recognize Indigenous lands, while managing the rest sustainably.

Stand with me now to defend the forest, and when we are one million strong, I will deliver our call straight to Amazon leaders at the summit. Add your name now!
My people, the Paiter Suruí, have been fighting for centuries to defend the forest. We have been disappointed many times, but this summit has reawakened hope: after years of rampant deforestation, mining, and violence in the Amazon, governments seem ready to make real changes so people can exist in harmony with the forest.

Already the new government in Brazil has cut deforestation by 68%, and it is calling for other Amazon nations to join efforts in going even further.

If it succeeds, this summit could spark the largest ever regional effort to protect the rainforest at the last possible moment to save it. So add your name to stand with me, and let's be a voice for the forest and its peoples in its hour of greatest need:
My people and I have seen the Avaaz community rise over and over again to help protect the rainforest. Together with allies, Avaaz has won crucial rainforest protections and fought back bad policies. This is what life defending itself looks like. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for being a part of that.

With hope and determination,

Txai Suruí and the entire Avaaz team
