Sued for saving the planet?!

Take Action Now!
France, Germany and other EU countries are leaving the Energy Charter Treaty – a toxic treaty that allows fossil fuel companies to sue governments for climate action. To stop these outrageous lawsuits, we need the entire union to withdraw. And now it's the best moment to put the pressure on the EU -- retweet Avaaz's tweet now to put the laggering Commissioners in the spotlight:

Dear friends across Europe,
It's outrageous -- just as countries are acting to curb pollution to protect the planet, fossil fuel firms are suing governments for billions when carbon-cutting affects their profits.

This is possible because of a powerful international treaty that almost no one has heard of: the Energy Charter Treaty.

It was designed to encourage investments, but now it's being weaponised to sue governments when they shut down dirty coal plants and oil rigs -- sabotaging our transition to 100% clean energy. Even Ukraine may face a lawsuit for seizing gas stations owned by a company with ties to Russia.

With partners, Avaaz launched a powerful campaign with 1 million signatures to stop this toxic treaty and 7 European countries already announced they will exit it! But that's not enough -- to stop these outrageous lawsuits, we need the entire EU to follow.

The EU Commission is hesitating and insiders say public pressure could tip the balance now. This is our chance to make sure no one is sued for acting on climate change:

Just a few weeks ago France, Germany and five other countries announced they would withdraw from the Treaty and today they finally did. This is a huge success and our wonderful community played a role in it.

But the fight is not over. Now, we need to use this moment to tell EU leaders that if they want to be remembered as climate heroes, they need to get us out of this planet-wrecking treaty, fast.

Avaaz is joining forces with experts, movements and activists across the continent ready to fight at every step of the process until big companies have no right to sue us for saving our future. Click now to send Avaaz's tweet to Ursula von der Leyen:

Climate change is the fight of our lives. There's now so much momentum on our side and bit by bit our movement is dismantling the systems that are pushing our planet to the edge. The actions we take today will impact generations to come. For our children, for the forests, the oceans, and everything we care about, we can't stop now, and we won't.
With hope and determination,
