Below a presstory:
The Homeless Action Collective (D.A.K.) organises a sleepover on the
street.
In Amsterdam the need for easy access overnight sleeping places surpasses
their availability. Each night many people have nowhere to sleep but
parks, doorways and the street.
The Amsterdam Council states rather that Amsterdam has enough sleeping
places available. This is not at all true.
Some could think 'sleeping outside in the summer isn't that bad is
it?' Rather, this is forbidden in Amsterdam, and since the police carry
out a so-called 'chase away' policy, homeless who sleep on the street
are popular prey to give large fines that they cannot pay in any way.
Homeless people end up sooner or later in jail to sit out the unpaid fines.
Such imprisonment often disrupts the process to find a job and a house,
which they need to start over again.
The DAK finds this an unjust situation. Through this system homeless are
discouraged to do something to change their situation. We say: give
homeless people the humane treatment that they have a right to!
In order to confront the council and city with the fact that they neglect
their duty to properly analyse the situation about homeless people we have
organised a sleepover on 12 May 2010 in front of the Stadhuis (City Hall).
Homeless, helpers and sympathisers shall sleep outside for the night.
Join us!
