Guess who just said goodbye to fossil fuels?! good news

Just in case you missed this last week! --

Dear Avaazers,

Our appeals followed G7 Chair Angela Merkel everywhere for 6 weeks.

Many told us it was a pipe dream, but the G7 Summit of leading world powers just committed to getting the global economy off fossil fuels forever!!!

Even the normally cynical media is raving that this is a huge deal.

And it's one giant step closer to a huge win at the Paris summit in December -- where the entire world could unite behind the same goal of a world without fossil fuels -- the only way to save us all from catastrophic climate change.

For 2 years our community has led global public mobilisation for this goal, including:
  • spearheading the gigantic, momentum-changing, 700,000 strong climate march last year
  • a 2.7 million person petition for 100% clean/0 carbon delivered to dozens of key leaders
  • scores of rallies, high-level lobbying meetings, opinion polls, and ad campaigns, all funded by our community
  • a 3 month all-out push for the G7 summit leadership, especially German Chancellor Angela Merkel, to put this on the agenda and agree to this goal

Our work is far from done, but it's a day to celebrate -- click here to read more and say congratulations to everyone else in this incredibly wonderful community!!

https://secure.avaaz.org/en/paris_here_we_come/?bwQkDab&v=61209

We spearheaded the largest climate march in history - nearly 700,000 strong and a game-changer for political momentum.

Just last year climate change seemed to many of us like a behemoth that was dooming our species to a significant probability of extinction due to our own stupidity and corruption.

But with hope, and good strategy, (the Avaaz effect:)), and the efforts of many leaders like German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Pope Francis, and organisations like our friends at 350 and the Guardian newspaper's work on fossil fuel divestment, as well as killer research from groups like the World Resources Institute, most experts now believe the tide is turning, and momentum is building to get a global deal in Paris this year that will set the world on course to a solution. It will be a long fight, we cannot afford to drop our guard, but today, we celebrate a battle won!!!

With gratitude and joy,

Ricken, Alice, Emma, Iain, and the whole Avaaz team

PS: the G7 declaration is just a commitment, and we need to hold them accountable, but commitments matter - sending an immediate signal to dirty and clean energy investors that will help accelerate the clean-energy boom we desperately need. Mass extinction - sign petition for elephants

Scientists just released shocking research that says the world is on the verge of a tragic "mass extinction" of countless species. But they also say there's time to stop it, and they have a proposal for action -- but they say to win we have to reach everyone. Sign their petition and then share it with everyone:

Dear friends,

It's all over the news — scientists just released new research that says that we're on the verge of a mass extinction of hundreds of species that "could easily, easily ruin the lives of everybody on the planet".

They say we're losing countless species, from dolphins to elephants to rhinos, at rates up to 100 times higher than normal — and it's dismantling Earth's whole biological framework. And it's all because of us, the humans.

But they also say this: there is still time to stop it, though not much.

The scientists — some of the most highly respected in the world — have written a proposal to world leaders about how we can stop the mass extinction and literally save the world. They say the best chance we have of getting urgent action is if we share it everywhere, and educate everyone about what's happening.

Avaaz was made for moments exactly like this -- our community makes up more than 1% of all internet users. If we each share it with one person that's 2%, 2 people that's 3% etc, etc... We could literally be the best chance to spread the word, and we can do it in days! Join now and share this urgent wake up call with everyone:

It's not the first time in history an extinction event has happened — the last time was 65 million years ago when the dinosaurs and almost everything else on the planet died out. But it's the first time that this kind of biological disaster is happening simply because one species (us) is abusing natural resources past the point of sustainability.

The scientists were incredibly conservative in their estimates, so it could be even worse than we think. But they're hopeful - one of them even said to CNN "I'm optimistic in the sense that humans react, in the past we have made quantum leaps when we worked together to solve our problems."

They've drafted a memo for governments that lays out the solutions and the actions we can take - which include taking urgent action to stop climate change, supercharging our conservation efforts, and drastically reducing pollution.

Scientists don't always venture into the world of politics with their conclusions, but this brave group of them are doing just that and we can put the strength of global people power behind them so they can win.

Someday I'd like to have kids but I think a lot about whether it's the right thing to do, since we're so likely to leave behind a far less beautiful, less hospitable world for all our children (and theirs). It is in moments like these, of great crisis and great opportunity, when the Avaaz community has so often risen up for the planet and won -- and given me hope that one day I'll raise a family and be proud of the world I introduce them to, and hand over to them.

With hope and determination,

Days to save whales - at least sign petition

Icelandic whalers are about to start harpooning over 150 endangered fin whales. But if we can get a tiny Caribbean nation to remove their flag from a ship that's carrying millions of dollars worth of fin whale meat to Japan, we can hit them where it hurts. Stopping this sale could turn the tide. The ship could leave in six days. Add your voice and share this urgently:

Dear friends,

The Icelandic whaling fleet is about to leave port to hunt and kill 150 endangered fin whales. We've come close to shutting down this barbaric operation before and now we have a chance to end it for good.

As the whalers sharpen their harpoons for this year's hunt, their boss is trying to ship last year's whale meat to Japan right now. Over 1,700 tonnes are about to be sent through the icy passage between Russia and the North Pole. But if the tiny Caribbean nation of St. Kitts and Nevis simply removes their flag from the vessel it can't leave port! Tourism is the main pillar of their country's economy and we can put their reputation on the line by throwing them into our giant global spotlight.

We have just six days before the boat could set sail.

Our community already helped push European countries to shun this shameful trade. Let's now get St. Kitts to stop helping the whalers! Sign now and share with everyone urgently -- Avaaz will deliver our voices straight to the new Prime Minister, and if he doesn't respond quickly, Avaaz'll target his biggest tourist market - the US - and show how St. Kitts is supporting the slaughter of these majestic beings:

Iceland's entire fin whaling industry is run by one man, Kristjan Loftsson, but his business is barely breaking even, so if we stop the whale meat from reaching Japan we can sink his profits! Other nations have removed their flag from vessels in response to public pressure over other environmental concerns so we know this can work for the whales. All we need to do is create a scandal and get a delay to make the crossing to Japan impossible.

Japanese whalers plan to resume "scientific" whaling in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary despite widespread opposition, and St. Kitts and Nevis votes in support of Japan's "research" at the International Whaling Commission. If we take them out of the equation now we can strike a deadly blow to both Icelandic and Japanese whaling at the same time!

Pressure has been mounting globally and nationally to stop the Icelandic whalers. This could be a turning point for the whales. Together we have the power to turn the International Whaling Commission into the International Whale Conservation Commission. And we can get started by stopping this year's harpooning and this whale meat shipment! Sign the urgent petition now:

https://secure.avaaz.org/en/days_to_save_whales_loc/?bwQkDab&v=61053

We know our voices work! Following our 1 million strong petition in 2013, the Dutch government blocked Iceland's whale meat shipments docking in the Netherlands. And together with Greenpeace, our community managed to get fin whale meat sent back to Iceland from Germany. Since then major shipping companies announced they would never ship whale meat again. We're making it harder and harder for this industry to make a profit. Let's shut it down for good!

With hope,

Elephants beaten at the circus

Posted By: PETA: People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (campaign leader)

This summer, dozens of elephants will be shackled in tiny boxcars and trailers as circuses crisscross the U.S. during the hottest months of the year.

Many will spend hours—even days—in chains as they're transported from one city to the next, perhaps even your own. When they feel the painful blows of a bullhook to the sensitive, paper-thin skin around their eyes and mouth, it can signal that they've reached the next destination—and they'll once again be forced to perform tricks, fearing what will happen to them if they don't.

These animals need our help, and they need it now.

Will you stand up for elephants and all other animals suffering in circuses and other cruel entertainment by making a gift today?

Circus promotions fail to mention that elephants and other animals don't voluntarily balance on balls, ride bicycles, or stand on their heads. They're forced into performing these ridiculous tricks, which they learn during violent training sessions during which they're beaten with bullhooks and shocked with electric prods.

When you stand with PETA, you'll be helping us achieve victories that truly make life better for elephants and all other animals abused by circuses. As we've seen in recent months, the drive to end the suffering of animals in circuses is gaining momentum, with significant progress such as the following:

  • Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus and the George Carden Circus International have announced that they're ending elephant performances, further proof that the public rejects the practice of separating baby elephants from their mothers and chaining and beating these sensitive, intelligent animals in order to force them to perform silly tricks.
  • Richmond, Virginia, and a growing list of other municipalities around the U.S. have banned bullhooks. These violent weapons don't belong in any city or state, and now we're working in other jurisdictions to get similar bans enacted to spare elephants pain.
  • New charges are being filed, including recent ones by the U.S. Department of Agriculture against the notorious animal abuser Carson & Barnes Circus in response to an incident in which elephants allegedly ran amok for 45 minutes.

Yet despite these and other vital developments, animals in circuses continue to suffer.Your tax-deductible gift to PETA now can change the lives of elephants and other animals who face cruelty and neglect.

Your support saves lives—please make your generous gift right now and help bring relief to animals in desperate need.

Thank you so much for your compassion.

UNITED Press Release: Death by Policy - Time for Change - International Refugee Day 2015

UNITED press release, 20.06.2015

DEATH BY POLICY - TIME FOR CHANGE!
International Refugee Day – 20th June

To mark International Refugee Day, UNITED is publishing an updated edition of its List of Deaths, a new website and an interactive map. We call on civil society to protest against the fatal policies of Fortress Europe that lead to the deaths of desperate people looking for safe refuge.

In recent months, stories of the thousands of people who have drowned in the Mediterranean sea while attempting to reach Europe have shocked people all over the continent and seen the issue of refugee deaths rise towards the top of the European political and media agenda. But despite the attention generated by the situation in the Mediterranean, EU representatives seem unable to come to any consensus on sharing the burden of migratory waves between southern and northern Europe, with nationalistic interests dominating discussions. Meanwhile migration continues, with the risky conditions at sea not seeming to provide any discouragement to migrants.

Complicating the issue yet further is the fact that refugee deaths are not limited to the Mediterranean: refugees die of suffocation and exposure hiding in freight containers and the undercarriages of planes; refugees die in the dire conditions of detention centres; refugees die in police custody and at the hands of deportation officials; refugees are murdered by fascist thugs, denied both the protection of the authorities and recourse to justice. As diverse as they may seem, all of these deaths are a direct result of the fatal policies of Fortress Europe: the political agenda which puts the protection of Europe's borders ahead of the protection of the lives of the world's most desperate and vulnerable people. This is DEATH BY POLICY.

Since 1993, UNITED has been documenting the effects of these fatal policies by compiling a list of the thousands of people who have died in their attempt to reach Europe. Now including details of over 22,000 people, the UNITED List of Deaths has become a key tool
(1) for activists, artists and researchers dealing with the rights of asylum seekers and refugees.
In Strasbourg, the activist group Collectif pour une autre politique migratoire has held demonstrations using a 100m-long print of the list which they unfurl at the European Parliament, defiantly reminding MEPs and the European Commission of their failure to act. Across the continent, Turkish artist Banu Cennetoglu displays the list on public billboards, reminding the people of Europe of the lives lost in search of the security and prosperity that they take for granted. In Amsterdam, Prof. Thomas Spijkerboer and his team have used the list to assist with their research into undocumented migrant deaths in Europe's maritime borders, shining a much-needed light into this neglected area of study.

This year, to mark The International Refugee Day on 20th June, UNITED is once again publishing an updated version of The List of documented deaths of asylum seekers, refugees and (un)documented migrants due to the restrictive policies of Fortress Europe. We have launched a new website, which includes an interactive map that clearly shows that the issue of refugee deaths is not limited to the Mediterranean and Europe's southern borders: this is a Europe-wide problem, which, if it is ever to be resolved, will require a Europe-wide response. Now more than ever, it is essential that we stand UNITED against refugee deaths.

Wake up the policy-makers! It is extremely important for the purposes of the campaign to raise awareness of this issue throughout Europe. The main targets are media and the general public. With their help it is possible to force European politicians to reconsider European immigration policies and to develop a human vision on migration.

Why 20th of June?

The Europe-wide network UNITED for Intercultural Action brings together more than 550 organisations from 48 European countries and a wide variety of backgrounds to work together on common activities and projects against racism, fascism and nationalism and in support of migrants and refugees. In order to bring new perspectives to the debate and to highlight the issue of migrant rights and refugee deaths, UNITED has been coordinating an annual campaign around this date since 1996. In 2001, following years of pressure and advocacy from campaign groups such as UNITED, a special UN General Assembly Resolution was adopted to declare 20th June as International Refugee Day. As the former African Refugee Day, this date was chosen as an expression of solidarity with Africa, which is the continent that hosts the most refugees.

(1) The UNITED List of Deaths and other UNITED publications can be freely re-used, translated and re-distributed, provided source (www.unitedagainstracism.org) is mentioned and a copy is sent to the UNITED Secretariat.

Europe's biggest shame? -- days to stop it! - at least sign petition for refugees

Nearly 1,800 people have drowned while crossing the Mediterranean this year. Now the EU has tabled a strong action plan to save them, but the UK, Poland and Spain are threatening to block it. Experts say massive public support is the only way to keep the plan alive. Join now the call for ambitious action to end Europe's biggest shame:

Sign the Petition

Dear friends,

Right now, terrified families are drifting in rusting boats somewhere on the Mediterranean, hungry, thirsty, and praying they do not drown.

Thousands of men, women and children could perish while crossing the Mediterranean this year -- but now we can throw them the lifeline they so desperately need.

In days, all EU governments will vote on an action plan that could save them, and ensure they have a safe refuge. But to their shame, countries like the UK, Poland and Spain are threatening to bring it down.

Together, let's build a giant Europe-wide call to show our leaders we won't accept this death sentence for the desperate. Sign now and share!

The bodies washing up on Europe's beaches are nothing less than a stain on the conscience of a continent. Some say these refugees are coming to Europe to take jobs and claim benefits, but the only thing driving people to risk their lives is the sheer terror of what will happen to them if they stay at home.

The new plan envisages the resettlement over the next 2 years of 20,000 refugees in desperate need of protection from outside Europe, as well as the relocation across the EU of 40,000 people seeking asylum who have arrived in Southern Europe. Although it seems a lot, in practice the burden-sharing proposal means that every EU country would host a reasonable number.

But key countries are refusing to engage -- some arguing that letting refugees settle will encourage more to make the journey. When the alternative is letting children drown, we have no choice but to act - and together we can change their minds.

Experts say that only a huge wave of public opinion can force our hard-hearted leaders to take real action to put an end to this tide of death on Europe's southern shores. Sign below and share with everyone:

From the UK to Malta, from Greece to France, thousands of Avaazers are already volunteering to help resettle families and lobby their governments to take more refugees. Now let's make sure all leaders across Europe hear this powerful message loud and clear: that we are ready to open our hearts and want them to do the same.

Hours to arrest a mass murderer - at least sign petition

Accused of leading a horrific genocide in Darfur, Omar al-Bashir has escaped arrest for 6 years. But today, a South African court could finally bring him to justice. Click now to call on South Africa to arrest al-Bashir, bring him to trial, and finally give Darfur's victims what they deserve -- we may not get another chance to catch him:

Dear friends,

Sudan's army and militia terrorized the population of Darfur for years. They murdered the men. They raped girls in front of their parents. And they've escaped justice. Until now.

Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir oversaw it all and is one of the world's most wanted men, charged with a horrific genocide. But for 6 years no one has succeeded in locking him up. Now is our chance -- he's in South Africa and a court has ordered that he's not allowed to leave until it decides, in just hours, if he should be arrested.

South Africa's ruling ANC party has already protested against arrest and could pressure the court to give in. But a massive outcry can ensure they stay out of it: this is a legal decision, not a political one. South Africa should arrest al-Bashir and either try him for genocide, or send him to the International Criminal Court. Click now and help finally get justice for the people of Darfur:

Troops under al-Bashir's command in Darfur have spent years attacking and destroying villages, chasing survivors into the dessert, surrounding refugee camps, killing almost 500,000 and uprooting millions of civilians from land they occupied for centuries. When applying for a warrant for his arrest, the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) said clearly that al-Bashir's "intent was genocide" and that he wanted to erase the history of an entire people.

The ICC is still young and because of political maneuvers, al-Bashir has avoided arrest in several countries over the years. Some -- including the ANC -- have criticized the court for focusing on crimes in Africa. But most of the cases at the ICC were brought forward by the countries themselves and Sudan is one of just two cases where the Security Council managed to agree to bring perpetrators to the court. And when it comes to crimes as horrific as those in Darfur, its justice that should matter, not politics.

The law is clear -- South Africa is a member of the ICC and is required to cooperate with the arrest warrant. The ANC already tried to give al-Bashir immunity and political pressure could lead the court to give in, but a massive global outcry could create a media wave strong enough to keep politics out. Click now to show the South African government that the world expects justice:

For international law to work, there can't be loopholes for international criminals. For there to be justice, our governments must put aside politics and act in the interests of humanity. Our community can show the way and help ensure that Darfur's victims finally get the justice they deserve.
