We're still here!

Once upon a time, there was a group of people who were declared criminals
overnight, and who then took to the streets and said: Your laws, not ours.
And they set fires in order to show that they will not go away silently,
that they will not surrender...
It's been a year since the squatting ban was implemented. And like on any
anniversary, it is time to look back and see what has changed.

The waiting lists for social housing have only gotten longer; the rights
of renters have been eroded more and more; anti-squat agencies flourish by
exploiting people in desperate need of a roof above their heads, offering
them only precarious solutions that are no real solutions at all.

The same goes for the squatting ban: it was never a real solution. It was
only a convenient way for politicians to escape responsibility. When they
said they wanted to solve the problem of housing shortage, that they
wanted to find solutions to emptiness, we knew they were lying. And the
last year has, once again, only proven that we were right not trusting
those two-faced lizards in the first place.

As long as those in power don't seem interested in solving the housing
problem, we will keep doing what we always do – squatting. We refuse to
lay our destinies in the hands of greedy speculators and housing
corporations. Instead we will keep providing solutions to ourselves, and
continue to do the best we can to help other people do the same.

Let us commemorate the 1st of October as the day that represents the way
we will never, ever give up.

Amsterdam-Oost krijgt alternatief sociaal centrum

AMSTERDAM, 25 JULI 2011 Enkele tientallen krakers hebben zondagmiddag een voormalig dierenasiel gekraakt in Amsterdam-Oost. Ze spreken de wens uit een sociaal centrum op te starten.

Daags na de kraak in de Polderweg is aan productiviteit geen gebrek in het voormalige 'dierenasyl'. Soppen, boenen, dweilen, bezemen, puinruimen. Een twintigtal krakers is druk in de weer de boel leefbaar te maken. Sinds het asiel zo'n vier jaar geleden leeg kwam te staan, heeft het stadsdeel Amsterdam-Oost, eigenaar van het pand, de boel drastisch laten verwaarlozen.

Dat het uit 1887 daterende gebouw de status heeft van monument maakt de verkrotting des te schrijnender. Na het vertrek van het dierenasiel, dat tachtig jaar praktijk had aan de Polderweg, heeft de deelraad weinig gedaan om het monument te onderhouden. Het gevolg is een pand in verval. De nieuwe gebruikers hoor je daar niet over klagen. Die zijn optimistisch over de mogelijkheden die zo'n karakteristiek leeg monument biedt.

Voortgekomen uit een burgerinitiatief onder de naam De Valreep, zet een ratjetoe aan jonge enthousiastelingen zich in om het pand om te toveren tot een sociaal centrum. Genoeg van de commercialisering in de stad willen ze laagdrempelige non-commerciële faciliteiten opbouwen voor Amsterdam-Oost. "In de geest van 't Blijvertje en Joe's Garage, maar dan met nieuwe mogelijkheden", zegt Rogier, woordvoerder van De Valreep.

Het voormalige dierenasiel maakt onderdeel uit van Oostpoort, een megalomaan prestigeproject waar Amsterdam in grossiert. Net als bij andere megaprojecten in de stad loopt ook de geldverslindende bouwput Oostpoort bepaald niet gesmeerd bij de ontwikkeling van een nieuw woon- en cultuurcentrum in het Polderweggebied. Peperdure onkosten en een economische terugval vertragen de bouw voor jaren.

Had het project in 2008 al klaar moeten zijn, inmiddels wordt het pas op z'n vroegst 2013 voordat ze het terrein gaan bebouwen gelegen rondom het voormalige dierenasiel. Nu ligt er slechts braakliggend land. Aangrenzend stroomt de ringvaart waar het OCP, een consortium van het Bouwfonds, Ymere en Stadgenoot, een trits luxe herenhuizen uit de grond wil stampen.

Nadien, als laatste fase, komt het gekraakte dierenasiel aan de beurt waarin een horecagelegendheid zal worden gevestigd. De krakers hebben daarmee in theorie nog minstens twee jaar de tijd waarin ze ongestoord hun sociaal centrum kunnen uitbaten. Toch vrezen de krakers dat stadsdeel Oost de nieuwe gebruikers liever kwijt dan rijk is. Na een gesprek maandagmorgen met de wethouder en projectmanager van Oostpoort, zegt Rogier: "Ze zitten er echt mee in de maag, ze willen ons eruit hebben."

Dat amper een dag na de kraak gelijk al Bouw- en Woningtoezicht langs is langs gekomen om te constateren dat het pand brandgevaarlijk is, lijkt een indicatie om het pand zo snel mogelijk te kunnen ontruimen. De krakers werken aan de brandveiligheid, desondanks heeft het stadsdeel Oost (lees: links bestuur) in een reactie laten weten dinsdag aangifte te zullen doen van de kraakactie.

Eerder vandaag is de beganegrond van Ceintuurbaan 207 in de Pijp te Amsterdam gekraakt.






Eerder vandaag is de beganegrond van Ceintuurbaan 207 in de Pijp te Amsterdam gekraakt. De beganegrond was duidelijk al meer dan een jaar niet meer in gebruik. De heer J.W.J Tulen van de politie heeft door middels van fotos en video opnamen samen met een collega leegstand geconstanteerd, maar mocht niet naar binnen.

De buren leken er verder ook erg tevreden over en keken rustig toe.

De kraak is onderdeel van de 'kraken draait door' dagen in Amsterdam welke gestart zijn in verband met de aankomende ontruimingen van woningen en vrijplaatsen

TEN KATESTRAAT 53/55/57 BUURTBRIEF 

Vandaag hebben we 3 panden in de Ten Katestraat herkraakt, hiep hoi! 

Een half jaar geleden werden de panden nog bewoond door krakers en anti-krakers. De anti-krakers werden de deur gewezen en de krakers zijn in overleg weggegaan. Woningbouwvereniging Rochdale zou de panden namelijk renoveren. Nadat iedereen zijn huis kwijt was en Rochdale de boel maar gauw potdicht maakte met het o-zo gezellig ogende citex bleek dat ze eigenlijk helemaal geen geld hebben om er aan de slag te gaan. 

Van de 3 naastgelegen panden panden, nummer 59/61/63, is de renovatie onlangs wel voltooid. Deze staan nu te koop voor riante bedragen. Leuk hoor, nog meer onbetaalbare woonruimte in Amsterdam.. Daar hadden we nog niet genoeg van zeker. Eenzelfde lot stond nummer 53/55/57 te wachten. Nou ja, als Rochdale er niet zo'n potje van gemaakt had dan.. 

Voor nu gaan wij er dus maar wonen. Nu eerst de boel wat huiselijker maken en na de nodige klusjes kunnen we er hopelijk nog een tijdje wonen.

Midden jaren negentig lijkt het hoogtepunt van de kraakbeweging voorbij. Ruim vijftien jaar na de Vondelvrijstaat en de kroningsrellen ('Geen woning, geen kroning') vindt filmmaker Joost Seelen die tijdens zijn studietijd in Nijmegen geïnteresseerd is geraakt in de theorie en praktijk van sociale bewegingen, dat het tijd is om zich aan een terugblik te wagen. Het is een relaas dat zich niet laat vangen in het beeld van de onschuldige Vondelvrijstaat waaraan door tankcolonnes een einde wordt gemaakt. De afzonderlijke verhalen voegt Seelen samen tot een kroniek van intriges en machtsstrijd in de periode tussen 1975 en 1988, die niet onderdoet voor de koningsdrama's van Shakespeare.

Zo worden Theo en zijn adjudant Jack de hoofdpersonen van DE STAD WAS VAN ONS. Zij waren de vertegenwoordigers van de Politieke Vleugel van de Kraakbeweging (PVK) die de morele standvastigheid van de beweging bewaakten, zo nodig met harde hand. Tegenover deze 'neostalinisten' zet Seelen krakers die niet mee willen in de spiraal van geweld. Die de ijskast op het dak niet met alle geweld op een een beneden staande ME'er willen gooien. Onthullend zijn de kaders die de filmmaker kiest om de geïnterviewden in beeld te brengen: ruim genoeg om de kijker een goede indruk te geven van hun huidige maatschappelijke situatie. De luxe woonomgeving van een aantal van hen wekt bijna jaloezie op.

Samen met oud-kraker Eric Duivenvoorden die het officieuze archief van de kraakbeweging onder zijn hoede heeft, schrijft Joos Seelen een scenario waarin de ontwikkelingen in de Amsterdamse kraakscene centraal staan. Een andere oud-kraker, beeldresearcher Gerard Nijssen, duikt uniek archiefmateriaal op.

Joost Seelen raakt gefascineerd door de verhalen van de betrokkenen. In zijn optiek vormt de kraakbeweging een scharnier tussen de collectieve acties van de jaren zestig (je sterk maken voor groepen uit de samenleving, zoals 'de arbeidersklasse') en het individualisme van de jaren tachtig (voor jezelf opkomen). Seelen ontdekt dat er zich het nodige binnen de beweging heeft afgespeeld, dat alleen onder intimi bekend is.

In 1996 gaat De stad was van ons tijdens het IDFA in première. Seelens conclusie dat de kraakbeweging aan onderlinge verdeeldheid ten onder is gegaan, wordt meteen bestreden door een aantal ex-krakers die in een verklaring laten weten dat de filmmaker zich schuldig maakt aan geschiedvervalsing. Seelen wijst erop dat hij geenszins pretendeert 'de geschiedenis' van de kraakbeweging te presenteren.

Gezien de ophef over het actieverleden van enkele politici in 2008, heeft De stad was van ons als analyse van een sociale beweging die zich volgens de normen van toen op het randje van het betamelijke bewoog, maar die nu als onaanvaardbaar wordt gezien, nog niets aan belang verloren.

An idea is to vote as a group on a weekly basis the movie that we think is the most inspiring. On the pages we can count the votes and show all of your proposals.
The movie that has the greatest number of votes will be the pick of the week. The proposal is to screen the winner in as many places as is possible.

  The voting system will be as follows - 1) Possible to choose five movies, 2) Giving each individual movie a point  between 1 and 5. (Example, your most favourite movie will get 5 points etc).

2008 04 11 Perspraatje Squatting Actions days

The action days were very succeful, the goals we set were achieved, so we could give up the political occupation of the Drawing school.

The weekend provided a lot of fun with lots of workshops, concerts and a Reclaim the Streets. A lot of people visited the action day, there were a lot of positive reactions from visitors and neighbours.

A more elaborated report will follow tomorrow, everybody is very tired now.

We greet in solidarity all other groups that made these international action day into a succes.

It is time for real action. Tens of thousands demonstrated for a socially just and effective climate policy in Copenhagen. Thousands of activists tried to enter the conference venue during the Reclaim Power Action in order to push for another, socially just climate agenda.

In the light of the political situation, the global movement for climate justice is gaining momentum, favouring alternative and real solutions. Our ideas and proposals are

in line with the demands of CJA, an international network on Climate Justice.

Some of the big asks:

    * We need to leave fossil fuels in the ground. Instead, we must invest in community-controlled renewable energy, and drastically reduce the current society's enslavement to energy.

    * Global capitalism is unsustainable per definition. We must stop over-production for over-consumption. You can't have infinite growth in a finite planet.

    * All should have equal access to the global commons through community control and sovereignty over energy, forests, land and water.

    * We must acknowledge the historical responsibility of the global elite and rich Global North for causing this crisis. Equity between North and south is essential.

If we put humanity before profit and solidarity above competition, we can live amazing lives without destroying our planet.

It is with all this in mind that a broad group of activists from Belgium and abroad have come together to create this summer's Camp for Climate Action. This year's camp is taking place from 29 July to 3 August. Different options for the location and the target are being considered. Sign up for our multi-language newsletter to stay up-to-date on our preparations (low email flow guaranteed!).

While regional camps prepared the ground for climate action in previous years, a first national climate camp took place in the harbour of Antwerp in August 2009. More than 400 people participated in a week full of education, direct action, encounter and exchange. There were actions against the meat industry, the Lange Wapper, nuclear energy etcetera. During one day, we occupied the most important coal hub in the harbour.

Everybody is welcome

We want the camp to be as inclusive as possible and we are reaching out to all those who share our vision. The camp is a place for anyone who's fed up with empty government rhetoric and corporate spin; for anyone who's worried that the small steps they're taking aren't enough to match the scale of the problem; for anyone who thinks present climate policies are only increasing inequalities and injustices; for anyone who wants to find concrete alternatives here and now; and for anyone who's worried about our future and wants to do something about it. It is not only a place for experienced activists, but also for all those who are interested, who want to learn more, and are looking for ways to become active. And everyone is free to participate in direct action -- or not!

We try to organise the camp in an ecological and carbon-neutral way. Briging people together in the camp is is our way of building a climate justice movement capable of tackling the root causes of climate change.

Come to the camp, or, even better, join in the preparation process! We are all volunteers and all help is welcome. Whatever your background, there is a role for you.

Thursday night, Dec. 9th. For sure it was a very special night. Brooke Shields was in Amsterdam to open the annual Millionaire Fair at the RAI exhibition centre. The opening night was very exclusive: invitees only! The place to be for the rich and wealthy. The market where you could buy anything you absolutely don't need. This year a new product was launched: a product which every millionaire should buy immediately: Golden Shit!



If you've everything in life: there's just one thing you'll miss. A beautiful piece of Golden Shit! 
The Piggy Millionaires went to the fair to trade with the ones who could afford Golden Shit. At the opening night hundreds of millionairs passed the red carpet and many of them showed interest in this wonderful new product. 

The Golden Shit in several sizes was presented on beautiful exclusive silver trays. Some of the shit was originally from celebrities. Of course we had a big one from Brooke Shields, but there was also a small royal one. Top quality solid Golden Shit! 
Prices starting at 500.000 Euro going up to more than 2 million... but then you'll have something very special! Also a great Christmas gift for your second or third wife! 

The Piggy Millionaires gave enthusiastic statements about this absolutely great product. Sometimes they even shouted: "Show me you're a millionaire! Forget the rest of the shit of this fair! Go for the real stuff: buy Golden Shit!" 

Anyway: Golden Shit is the investment we now need in these chaotic times of permanent economic crisis. Most of the millionaires did understand the great opportunities of Golden Shit. Next to it they were especially interested in the 10% discount - only at the opening night! For example: a special offer - not 1.000.000, but only 900.000 for one of the best pieces of Golden Shit. 

There was only 1 millionaire (or was it someone from the organisation of the fair?) who was a bit jealous and kicked one of the trays as hard he could with his right feet. He was clearly angry. The shit flied all over the place. Luckily the strong Golden Shit survived and the Piggy Millionaires could go on with asking attention for the ultimate gadget. 

Also the security was in doubt: what to do with so much attention from millionaires for the new product at the red carpet? They decided to don't do anything at all. Which was a good decision. Otherwise the Piggy Millionaires should even have got more media attention. 

The succesful launch of the great wannahave took more than 45 minutes. Around 21.15 almost all millionaires had entered the fair and it was about time to go home and have a drink to celebrate the fantastic introduction of that beautiful product Golden Shit. 

The Piggy Millionaires left the area. A few minutes later they got a special salute from a police car with beacon flashing. Although they tried to follow them they were not able to get close c(l)o(w)ntact with the Piggy Millionaires. Why? All of a sudden the Piggy Millionaires were gone... but for sure more Golden Shit will stay and find its way on the Millionaire Fair!

"It's not only about squatting" exposition. video

"It's not only about squatting" that's exposition of political posters which are (or use to be) hanging at squatting places. It shows that many of squatters are active also at other fields like: social struggle for freedom, equality, tolerance, human and animal rights, clean environment, climate justice etc. Living at the front line of fight for affordable houses for everyone, in that way ( or another ) it's making the whole social struggle stronger. This exposition was in the (squatted for the days of actions) social center Kraak Meer ( fire station ). Monsanto plant shut down by activists

Action group Round Up Monsanto successfully shut down the main Monsanto plant in the Netherlands, formally De Ruiter Seeds. Forty activists chained themselves to the entrance gate at the wake of day and prevented personnel from entering the office buildings and greenhouses.
Thierry Boyer, head of Monsanto's European vegetable division, contacted his superiors and decided not to press charges.As a result the police will not interfere. " The company will be effectively close for the day", the police chief in charge confirmed.
Clearly Monsanto is afraid of more negative publicity connecting the company to a police eviction, and prefers to close down the plant where 350 people are employed.
Many employees welcomed the action and said they were not happy with the take over of De Ruiter Seeds by Monsanto in 2008.
This action is part of the growing world wide resistance against Monsanto and other multinational agro-businesses.
Banners on the gates and on the Monsanto logo on the premises said:
"Monopoly on food and toxic agriculture - the world according to Monsanto" and "Imagine a world without poison and without GMO's - a world without Monsanto".

De Ruiter Seeds is the 3d Dutch vegetable seed company that was bought up by Monsanto in recent years. With these acquisitions the company aims to monopolise the vegetable seed market.

Monsanto is part of the 'Round Table of Responsible Soy' (RTRS), a greenwash initiative to label RoundupReady GM soy as 'responsible'. The label will be launched in June this year.
