Lecture the Populist Phenomenon

[English]
These last years we have seen an impressive resurgence of populist movements. Whether it's the PVV in the Netherlands, the Tea Party in the United States, or Berlusconi and the Lega Nord in Italy: it is no longer a marginal phonemenon. Despite the political success of these movements, the political response is often limited to moral condemnation and political underestimation. On this night we will look at the strategy and imagery of right wing populism. The goal is to find ingredients for a possible counterstrategy of the left.
Programme:
* Merijn Oudenampsen (editor of Jaarboek Kritiek and Open Cahier) will focus on Wilders and the swing to the right in the Netherlands.
* Luisa Lorenza Corna (designer connected to the Jan van Eyck Academie in Maastricht) will focus on the use of imagery by the Lega Nord in Italy.
* After a short break, we will continue with a selection of populist promotion films, amongst which Sarah Palin figures as Grizzly Mum, Silvio Berlusconi is eulogized in karaoke and Jörg Haider stars as super athlete.
This night is being organised on the occasion of the appearance of a theme issue on populism of Jaarboek Kritiek. We will also have a sneak preview of the new populism edition of Open Cahier.
Time: Monday 6 December, 20 hrs.
Location: Schijnheilig, Passeerdersgracht 23, Amsterdam

Mama Cash campagne "Dit jaar nog!"
Amsterdam, 25 november 2010.

Like every year also this one black saint against racism its doing his educational action. Here it's the movie
And here the speech for kids from last year:
SAINT NICHOLAS'S AGAINST RACISM
When a child of five years says to his
school teacher :
"He can't be Saint Nicholas"
And the school teacher asks:
"Why not"
To which the five year old boy replies:
" Because his skin is black"
You may wonder why I am dressed as
Saint Nicholas with a black face.
To which I will reply:
"WHY NOT"?
This question was asked recently by a five year old boy in a Dutch school.
Some believe that the Caucasian race is by far superior to all other races. This is racism, it is called White Supremacism. Racism can be expressed subtly, this being much harder to identify. White Supremacism can be expressed overtly and accepted by mainstream in a blink of an eye, without questioning such overt antics. Picture this, a white bearded figure named Saint Nicholas sitting on a white horse, and wearing religious red bishop robes. Let's not forget Christians associated the colour black with evil and degradation. His submissive slave/servant named Zwarte Piete, who has supposedly evolved from a devil and was miraculously tamed by that wonderful white supremacist Saint Nicholas. Others say that Pete is an Ethiopian slave freed by that pure and very white Saint. So as it goes Zwarte Piete symbolized the devil, a joker who was submissive, frightening and disobedient. Anyone who shouts 'It's Dutch Tradition' is using this to block intelligent analysis and maintain the status quo of negative stereotyping. And some history:
The first voices that protested against Black Peter came from the former Dutch colony Surinam where the holiday was also a national celebration. When Surinam received its status of independence in 1975, the black slave was abolished. A new movement came into existence that searched for new positive images of black people. Representations of blacks as docile and submissive were no longer accepted. "Saint Nicholas" was changed into a black figure called "Good Father" and accompanied by black "employees". This change may seem minor but also in Surinam the myth of the white saint and his black slave was difficult to contest or criticise. For example, in 1970 writer Astrid Roemer was a High School teacher who refused to celebrate the holiday at school. She talked to her colleques and the principle of the school, but they refused to listen to her arguments. The day of the celebration she did not appear at the school. She was fired the next day.
In the seventies a lot of Surinamese people migrated to the Netherlands due to the political circumstances in their home country. Their presence led to a re-evaluation of the ways the Dutch dealt with their colonial history and their images of black people. Again Black Peter was scrutinised, only this time in a context where the majority of society was white. Blacks had already experienced the insult of hearing "Black Peter!" shouted at them on the streets in Paramaribo (as they were associated with the figure), but the person shouting was often black himself. In the Netherlands they entered a society that hardly knew anything about them; the only images white people were familiar with were stereotypes like 'Black Peter'. In response to the insult of the stereotype some Surinamese people refused to send their children to school when "Saint Nicholas" was celebrated, others urged for alternatives like a red or blue "Peter" in stead of a black one. For a while the yellow, blue, red painted versions of "Black Peter" were successful but as the protest-voices declined the Black version of Peter dominated the eighties.

Kamer: illegalen helpen mag
Acquittal for rebel clowns? / Vrijspraak voor rebel clowns?
Nederlandse tekst volgt / Dutch text will follow
Do you remember? May 23st 2009 neo-nazi's of the NVU (Dutch Peoples Union / Nederlandse Volks Unie) demonstrated in Den Bosch. Of course there were all kind of protests. Antifa initiatives, many people from the neighbourhood and also clowns from 'The National Duckies Front'
http://www.indymedia.nl/nl/2009/05/59649.shtml Februari 23rd 2010 the first clown had to visit the court. It was far too complicated for just 1 judge...
http://www.indymedia.nl/nl/2010/02/65541.shtml An extra round was needed at the Collegial Court (Meervoudige Kamer)
October 20th 2010 the organisation 'Don'tLetThemWalk' published a black book about everything what went wrong in Den Bosch when the NVU marched and people tried to protest. Loads of stories (in Dutch), including the experiences from 5 rebel clowns
http://www.indymedia.nl/nl/2010/10/70454.shtml November 30th 2010 finally the first rebel clown got the attention she needed from the Collegial Court. After a short welcome by one of the judges the prosecutor started: "Let's keep it short", she said. Followed by lines about the confusion she experienced reading the reports and the strange attempts to get clowns to court: one clown already got a letter they shouldn't prosecute him, one clown never got any letter, 3 other clowns each got a different proposal for a fine.
The first of these last 3 was today's case.
Yeahhh and as 'National Duckies Front' they did exactly the same. Even the prosecutor couldn't understand what happened by the police and the prosecution. She said: "It's a strange way of acting". She confirmed the clowns didn't act against article 184 (about not following police orders, etc). Her c(l)o(w)nclusion was loud an clear: "There are too many loose ends in this case!".
That's why she proposed acquittal.
Great! Finally a prosecutor understands the meaning of red noses!
Then the lawyer started his plea. He had a very good and long story. All charges asked for, no screamed for acquittal. Next to it he gave all 3 judges and the prosecutor the black book published by 'Don'tLetThemWalk'.
Hopefully it will make clear clowns and many other people should be free to express themselves on moments neo-nazi's are marching through the streets!
Judge's ruling expected Tuesday, Dec. 14th.
The black book is still available in bookshops like Rooie Rat and Fort van Sjakoo, etc. (special issue Alert! October 2010, 3,50 euro)
