Dear Avaaz community,

A 23-year-old student has died after being gang raped on a bus for hours. This is the last straw in the global war on women. Join massive protests in India, and call on the government to strengthen laws and launch a major public education campaign to challenge and shame the grotesque attitudes that led to this violence:

She was a 23-year-old physical therapy student who boarded a bus in Delhi last month. Six men locked the door, and savagely raped her for hours, including with a metal rod. They dumped her naked in the street, and after bravely fighting for her life, she died last weekend.  

Across India, people are responding in massive protests to say enough is enough. In India a woman is raped every 22 minutes, and few see justice. Globally, a staggering 7 in 10 women will be physically or sexually abused in their lifetime. This horror in Delhi is the last straw -- it's 2013, and the brutal, venal, global war on women must stop. We can start by drawing the line in India.

We urgently need both stronger law enforcement and a massive public education program to change the grotesque but common male attitudes that permit violence against women. The ringleader of the woman's rapists coldly says she deserved it because she dared to stand up to him. Blaming the victim and other outrageous attitudes are found across society, including in the police who continually fail to investigate rape. Such views repress women and corrupt men everywhere. Massively funded public education campaigns have radically shifted social behaviour on drunk driving and smoking, and can impact the treatment of women. Tackling the root causes of India's rape epidemic is vital, alongside better laws and faster legal processes.

Advertising in India is relatively cheap, so a significant funding commitment could blanket airwaves in multiple media markets for a sustained period of time. The ads should target male subcultures where conservative misogyny thrives, directly challenging and shaming those attitudes, ideally using messengers like popular sports figures that carry authority with the audience.

We can influence the official Commission set up to find ways to crack down on India's wave of sexual violence. If we can show real success in shifting attitudes in India, the model can be applied to other countries. The money spent will more than pay for itself by reducing poverty and promoting development, since treatment and empowerment of women has been identified as one of the greatest single drivers of social and economic progress. 8 januari 2013: politiek proces tegen migratieactiviste Joke Kaviaar wegens 'opruiing'
- Poging om radicale stellingname de mond te snoeren

Utrecht, 26 december 2012 – Op dinsdag 8 januari om 13.45 uur behandelt de meervoudige kamer van de rechtbank in Haarlem (Simon de Vrieshof 1) de zaak tegen Joke Kaviaar wegens 'opruiing tot het plegen van strafbare feiten of gewelddadig optreden tegen het openbaar gezag' (artikel 131 lid 1 Wetboek van Strafrecht). Het gaat hierbij om citaten uit vier artikelen over het vreemdelingenbeleid. Opvallend is dat de eerdere aanklacht 'terroristisch oogmerk' (art. 131 lid 2) niet in de dagvaarding is opgenomen.
De Steungroep 13 September roept op stelling te nemen tegen deze kwalijke strafvervolging, en vindt dat een ieder het recht en alle reden heeft om het vreemdelingenbeleid te bekritiseren.

Op 13 september 2011 werd Joke Kaviaar, dichteres, artiest, en actief lid van verscheidene actiegroepen die zich verzetten tegen het Nederlandse migratiebeleid, opgepakt door de Nationale Recherche en drie dagen in beperkingen vastgehouden. Er werd haar 'opruiing en verspreiding tot opruiing, met terroristisch oogmerk' ten laste gelegd. Ook werd er huiszoeking gedaan. Drie maanden later, op 7 december 2011, liet het Landelijk Parket van het Openbaar Ministerie haar website ontoegankelijk maken. De website is op 8 december 2011, een dag later, door sympathisanten weer online gezet en staat er nog altijd "inclusief de opruiende teksten" aldus een proces-verbaal in het dossier.

Na een langlopend onderzoek (onder de naam 'Gulkana') door de Unit Contra Terrorisme en Activisme van de Nationale Recherche, moet Joke Kaviaar nu voor de rechter verschijnen. Opvallend is dat de verzwarende aanklacht dat zij hierbij een 'terroristisch oogmerk' zou hebben niet in de dagvaarding opgenomen.
Dat doet, aldus de steungroep, het vermoeden rijzen dat deze verzwaring van de aanklacht ten tijde van de arrestatie, de huiszoeking, en gedurende het hele onderzoek enkel is toegevoegd als intimidatie, en om gebruik te kunnen maken van de vergaande opsporingsbevoegdheden uit de terrorismewetgeving. Uit de buitensporige huiszoeking kon reeds worden opgemaakt dat hier vooral sprake was van een fishing expedition in een poging de radicale No Border beweging in Nederland in kaart te brengen.

Bij de start van het onderzoek 'Gulkana' stelde de Nationale Recherche reeds dat dat "doelstellingen" van dit onderzoek, naast het "doen ophouden feit" bestonden uit het "ontmoedigen van verdachte en groepering" en "een signaal afgeven aan verdachte, groepering en bevolking." Ook hieruit blijkt volgens Steungroep 13 September duidelijk dat er een politiek show- en proefproces zal plaatsvinden, bedoeld om Joke Kaviaar een flinke straf toe te bedelen en zo de mond te snoeren, medeactivisten af te schrikken, de vrijheid van meningsuiting voor meningen die de staat aanvallen in te perken, jurisprudentie te verkrijgen die het begrip 'opruiing' oprekt en het Nederlandse en Europese migratiebeleid ten koste van alles te verdedigen tegen toenemend verzet.

Ten tijde van de arrestatie is door een groep mensen die zich solidair hebben verklaard met Joke de Steungroep 13 September opgezet. Met de rechtzaak van Joke in het zicht zal de steungroep in de aanloop hiervan regelmatig bericht geven en komen met een aantal artikelen die de zaak van verschillende kanten belichten. Daarnaast roept de steungroep mensen en groeperingen op de teksten van Joke Kaviaar verder te verspreiden, mirrors op te zetten van de gehele website 'www.jokekaviaar.nl' en zelf artikelen te schrijven die het vreemdelingenbeleid aanklagen.

ROXANA

Roxana Hewett works as a healer and teacher of tantra. She brings a fresh approach to the classic meditative path of tantra. A key focus of her work is to teach micro-practises which invite an integration of  everyday moment to moment living with meditation.

Her teaching is enriched by a profound dedication to healing, she is a graduate of two world-renowned healing programs - the Barbara Brennan School of Healing and Jason Shulman's profound program of Non-Dual Kabbalistic Healing. With a rich background as a Rudolf Steiner school teacher she offers the wisdom of these varied streams.

VINCENT

Vincent Hewett has studied tantra with Mahasatvaa Sarita since 2004. During this time he balanced his work in the corporate world with newfound insights from tantric practice. It is this bridging between modern living and a conscious path of awakening that informs his pragmatic approach to the tradition of Tantra.

In 2010 Vincent with his wife Roxana developed a new body of trainings.  This work offers a modern approach for all to benefit from the wisdom of tantra and for couples to embody conscious relationship. Vincent is completing Jason Shulman's Non-dual healing program and is a member of the Mankind project's New Warrior Training.

ASEED zal na het vertonen van de film 'The future of food' een korte update geven over de gentechgewassen op de velden in Nederland, met een focus op aardappels, de universiteit en bedrijven die veldproeven doen met gentechpiepers, en het verhaal van het verzet daartegen...een verhaal dat deels nog geschreven moet worden!

We willen graag brainstormen en van gedachte wisselen over concrete actieplannen om een effectieve, bredere anti-gentechbeweging in Nederland te vormen.

Joke Kaviaar has been arrested September 13th 2011 on charges of writing
her opinion about Dutch migration politics just a little too inflammable
according to the state prosecution, and was at the time kept in solitary
custody for 3 days.

December 7th 2011 the public prosecution censored her whole website

back online only one day later! The site is still there along with all
kinds of mirrors and stuff.

Today Joke is facing trial on charges of 'incitement' so this seems like

Onze rechten en vrijheden worden in hoge snelheid vernietigd, ook in Nederland met Teeven als pleitbezorger van privacybeperkende maatregelen als downloadverbod, verplicht afstaan van encryptiesleutel, lachwekkende WOB procedures, deep packet inspection van mobiel internetverkeer, en talloze andere maatregelen gericht op censuur en surveillance.
