| People in Gaza are living through hell as Israel bombs and starves children, and warnings of genocide mount. This week, EU foreign ministers could take action – by stopping massive trade perks granted to Israel. The EU has suspended trade agreements before, for far less. Together, let's build a huge call. Avaaz will be in Brussels with giant portraits of Gazan children to make sure EU leaders can't look away. | | | Dear friends across the EU, | Right now, the EU is at a crossroads.
EU foreign ministers have to decide whether to keep granting Israel massive trade perks — despite overwhelming evidence of human rights violations in Gaza: children starving, hospitals bombed, civilians and aid workers killed, and warnings of genocide from UN experts.
All of this surely violates the EU-Israel Association Agreement, which requires respect for human rights. And the EU has suspended trade agreements before — with Cambodia, Syria, and Zimbabwe — for far less.
Avaaz just brought doctors recently returned from Gaza to meet with EU decision-makers, and on Wednesday, giant portraits of kids from Gaza will go up in Brussels. Let's now also build an urgent citizens' call to show we expect EU governments to suspend Israel's trade privileges until international law and human rights are respected. | | | What's happening in Gaza violates not only international law but a core condition of the EU-Israel trade deal: respect for human rights, enshrined in Article 2 of the so-called EU-Israel Association Agreement. As one emergency physician who worked in Gaza said "The violations of Article 2 by Israel are not theoretical for me. I saw them with my own eyes." The EU is Israel's biggest trading partner — but Israel makes up just 0.8% of EU trade. Suspending preferential access would hit Israel economically and show the world that the EU stands by its values.
Sign now and share this call with others so we can show decision-makers across Europe people are watching what they'll decide: | | Avaaz members have stood with the people of Gaza and for human rights everywhere – again and again. We cannot stop now. Let's keep showing up together for freedom and justice.
With hope and determination,
Antonia, Huiting, Mario, Eza and the whole Avaaz team | | | | |
