"Ondertussen weet iedereen in Nederland waar Schinveld ligt.

Advices from Free Tibet activists

http://www.racefortibet.org/resources/organize.php

Tips for Writing Letters

There are a few simple rules:

1. Always be polite. This rule is essential and invariable. Your aim is to help, not to relieve your own feelings. Governments don't respond to abusive letters.
2. Always write your letters on the basis that the government concerned is open to reason and discussion.
3. Try to follow ICT's list of recommendations in the case in question. For instance, if an Appeal asks you to appeal for medical treatment for a prisoner, make sure that you request this, and not a fair trial or release. One message said repeatedly is stronger than many mixed signals.
4. Stress that your concern for human rights is not politically based in any way, but in keeping with basic principles of international law.
5. If you have any special interest or link with the country, it is a good idea to mention this in your letter. For instance, you may have visited it or studied its history.

Be brief. A good rule is not to write more than one page (i.e. one side).

Tips for Writing Media Releases

The press release is the standard way of distributing stories to the media to give advance notice of an event you are planning and provide background information on the nature of the event. A press release also makes it easier for journalists to file the story and get the facts right.

Tips:

* Read newspapers - what sort of stories are printed in which parts of the newspaper?
* Are there particular journalists covering related stories?
* Always make it clear who a press release is coming from, e.g. by using headed paper. It makes it look official and professional, and immediately shows journalists who is writing.
* Make the heading interesting and put it in capitals or bold. Always put a date on your news release. Make it clear to whom it is addressed (for example, news editor).
* Always type - never handwrite. Use double line spacing to allow journalists to more easily mark and make changes to the copy.
* Keep it short and simple. Ideally, press releases should be on one side of paper.
* Keep paragraphs and sentences short.
* Put the main facts - and the "5Ws" in the first paragraph if possible:
o Who is doing it?
o What is happening?
o Where is it happening?
o When is it happening?
o Why is it happening?
* Make the first sentence interesting. If you do not hook the journalist's attention immediately s/he will not read on.
* Try and include a good quote from someone associated with the release, explaining why you are involved with Beijing 2008: Race for Tibet
* Always put at least one contact name with day and evening contact numbers on the release. Make sure the contact person will be available on these numbers at the specified times.
* It is always important to follow up press releases. Whether you post or fax the release you do not know whether it has reached its destination unless you check. There is only one way to make sure, and to find out whether the journalist is interested, and that is to talk to the person. This will also give you a chance to summarize why your release is important and newsworthy.

Tips for Organizing Events

Organize a 'Race for Tibet' event in your local area! Whether it be a fun run, dinner party, read-a-thon or bike race, get your friends together, have fun and spread the word!

Please note: Unfortunately, due to limited resources, we are unable to help you fund or plan your local event. However, we'd love to receive news of your event and see photos of how it went. Please drop us an email - click here!

Tips:

* Give yourself sufficient time to plan your event
* Choose carefully the type of event you want to organize (eg. dinner party, movie screening, bike race) and ask a friend or colleague to help you plan
* Decide on the location for your event. If it's in a public place, check whether you need to get permission from the local authorities
* Choose an appropriate date. Is the date suitable or does it clash with any other events in your area?
* Write down a list of all the things that you need to organise and tick them off as you go along. They could include:
o When and where will you hold the event?
o How will you raise awareness of it?
o How much support do you need?
o Who do you need to ask for permission?
* Consider how you'll promote the event:
o Who are you trying to attract?
o Do you need any flyers or posters? How many? Who will design and print them?
o Where will you put them?
o Do you need to send a press release to local papers or local radio? If so, click here to read Tips for Writing Media Releases
o Do you need to print invites?
* On the day, designate at least one table to Beijing 2008: Race for Tibet materials:
o Download and print Tibet fact sheets - click here.
o Order Beijing 2008: Race for Tibet stickers - click here.
o Order Beijing 2008: Race for Tibet postcards - click here.
* Take lots of photos
* Write a story about your event and email it to us!

Durgerdam tree destruction appeal case in Amsterdam

It is against the laws of Amsterdam to cut down trees without permission. In the Amsterdam Court of Appeal on the Prinsengracht, it emerged yesterday, during the appeal hearing in a case against an environmental activist and protester, that the felling of over thirty mature trees in Durgerdam on May 2, 2006 was done illegally without permission from the local council, Stadsdeel Amsterdam Noord. The protester was convicted of "resisting arrest" when he climbed up one of the trees (risking his own life in the process) as the trees were being felled. Pepper spray was used against him to prevent him from continuing his protest. During the case one of the police officers that removed him from the tree said when giving evidence "the trees had to be cleaned," a polite euphemism for destruction. It was only during the summing up by the defence counsel, that a letter, sent by Stadsdeel Amsterdam Noord to Mr. L. Bergvoet of Success Parken BV, was produced in evidence. Not only was the felling of the trees done illegally, but it was also done during the time of year when birds were nesting in the trees, when the law requires that the birds be left in peace and quiet. Rubbish from the demolition was also dumped illegally on the ground, in particular the highly hazardous material asbestos, which has been banned in the EU as a building material. The sign at the entrance to the land still warns of the risk two years later. The letter from the Gemeente Amsterdam also points out that serious damage has been done to the natural environment, that will be costly and difficult to repair. All of this took place in an area that is of great natural beauty and value, a nature reserve for the many birds that use the waters of the Ijselmeer. It seems to me that the wrong person was in the dock yesterday at the Court of Appeal. How can the police assist an illegal demolition that is obviously a serious infringement of environmental legislation? The brave actions of two protesters (one of whom was later released without charge) have brought the folly of this case out into the open. It would be most unjust if this conviction was allowed to stand, when to this very day the real offenders have yet to face justice. Every day many small pieces of nature are destroyed, often illegally, and as a result little by little the natural beauty and stability of the earth is reduced. Today is Earth Day when we call those in power to account for the way in which the natural environment is not taken seriously in the political process. The Durgerdam case is one small example of many that need not have happened if more respect and care for the ecology of the natural world had been taken into account. Why was there no communication between the Chief of Police and the City of Amsterdam on the day that this illegal act took place? Why didn't the police ask the owner if he had permission to cut the trees down before they assisted in the eviction of the protesters?

About camping according to Cookie mouse

From his blog : http://leightoncookie.blogspot.com/2008/04/what-is-better-trees-or-asbestos.html

What is better, trees or asbestos?

This seems a strange question to ask, which is why I was so saddened yesterday when I visited the village of Durgerdam, which is a part of Amsterdam North. The village is very picturesque, with lots of small houses and plenty of boats on the water. This is an area that is full of wildlife, especially birds. A couple of years ago I visited a small campsite near the vilage, where some friends of mine used to spend their weekends. Yesterday we went there on our bikes to take these pictures. It was so windy that sometimes we had to get off the bikes and walk.

There used to be over fifty trees on this piece of land, which was a refuge for many of the birds. Now all the trees are gone. Everyone staying at the campsite was evicted and all the trees were cut down. That was two years ago. While the buildings were being demolished asbestos was released onto the land, which is why the sign "gevaarlijk asbest" or "danger, asbestos" is on the fence. The demolition work was done illegally without permits and this Monday the appeal court of Amsterdam will be hearing the case against one of the protesters arrested during the eviction. He wanted to try to stop the trees from being cut down. All that is now left behind is this poisoned wasteland, which is why I ask the question: what is better trees or asbestos?

When will those in power learn to respect nature and not just destroy it? In this case two years later nothing has been done with the land, which was cleared and evicted on May 2, 2006.
On a more positive note, Earth Day celebrates the environment on April 22, and for the past ten years the part of Amsterdam known as "de Pijp" has held a gardening day to commemorate the occasion, so this Sunday we will all be digging up small parts of the streets and putting some plants in place of the concrete. Our young nine year old is very keen to take part, and she's been busy making lots of preparations today. It should be a pleasant Sunday afternoon's urban gardening.
Today I got lots of tomatoes and peppers at the organic market and plan to cook something colourful this evening. The sprouting mission has been postponed a few days as I'm waiting to see a friend of mine, who does it all the time, to get some tips before I start. In particular I want to know which seeds are the best to start with. The weather is getting a little warmer so I hope to be out and about more, and to take more trips to the country around Amsterdam, and do some foraging for food plants. There are lots of nettles and dandelion that are fresh this time of year. With food prices rising it seems to make sense to try to be as self-sufficient as possible.

Rechtzaak over stuntel-ontruiming gekraakte camping

PERSBERICHT

Rechtzaak over stuntel-ontruiming gekraakte camping

Amsterdam, 18 april 2008

boom was geklommen.

2nd international meeting for squats and autonomous spaces

Interspace Berlin: 2nd International meeting for squats and autonomous spaces, 24-26 May 2008

Kesselberg, Berlin 24th - 26th May 2008: The time and the place for
the meeting in May are now fixed. The Second International Squatters
and Autonomous Spaces meeting will be from the 24th to the 26th of May
2008 on the Kesselberg near Berlin.

International meeting for autonomous spaces - why?

Last November several activists called for a meeting in Dijon,
France. The main intention of this meeting was the preparation of the
decentralized days of action on the 11th and 12th of April 2008. During
the meeting people were very interested in a more continous
communication on an international level and expressed the need and
desire for more discussion time.

Thus was born the idea to have further meetings, to achieve durable
exchange and solidarity on an international level. Some people offered
to organize the next meeting in Berlin and squatters from Barcelona
already announced to organize a following one.

The time

The meeting will last three days: from Saturday May 24th till
Monday 26th. We invite everybody to arrive on Friday during the day or
in the evening.

For those who can stay a bit longer, the Berlin free spaces action
days are taking place from the 30th May to the 2nd June
( http://wba.blogsport.de).

Agenda

We of course have some ideas and have included the suggestions
already made in Dijon, but the agenda is open and in the end determined
by the people who come. If you have ideas, wishes or if you want to do
a workshop, send us an email to intersquatberlin@riseup.net

Proposed topics so far:

* How do we deal with repression?
* What new strategies are there to create and invent squats and autonomous spaces?
* How does paying rent or buying houses influence the reality of autonomous spaces?
* What are free spaces and why are they important?
* How do autonomous spaces generate, maintain and involve themselves in broader social struggles?

And of course there will be need to speak about the April Action Days,
to evaluate the actions and the networking process and to possibly
further develop the infrastructure created in Dijon.

The place

The meeting is taking place at Kesselberg, an autonomous/project
space in the countryside just outside Berlin. There is space at
Kesselberg for about 100 people to sleep (but please bring tents if you
have one), as well as several rooms for plenaries and workshops. The
place is surrounded by woods and there is a lot of space for taking
breaks or meeting outside if the weather is good.

Leave your dogs at home if possible. If you do bring them please
keep them close to you at any time, as there are wild animals in the
woods surrounding Kesselberg and already a bunch of dogs living there.

The site is also chemical free. The people at Kesselberg have said
they can provide soap, but if you bring your own, make sure it is
completely chemical free.

How to get there from Berlin:

Public transport: The nearest train station is Erkner. Just take
the S3 train, direction Erkner. This is a local Berlin train line and
tickets cost about 3 euros.

From Erkner station we can either pick you up if you let us know
when you’re arriving, or you can take the bus. The bus is Line 428,
direction Ziegenhals, until the stop ‘Neu Zittau, Kesselberg’. The
entrance to the Kesselberg land is next to the bus stop. Alternatively,
it takes about 20 mins to cycle there from Erkner.

With a car: Kesselberg is about 7km south of Erkner, between Neu
Zittau and Wernsdorf. Driving from the Berliner Ring, either take the
Erkner exit via Neu Zittau, or the exit Niederlehme via Wernsdorf,
direction New Zittau. For a map see www.kesselberg.info/weg.html

There is limited parking space at Kesselberg, so it would be helpful to
let us know if you are coming by car or wanting to park a live-in
vehicle on site for the duration of the meeting.

So that we can prepare enough space, organise enough food etc., we
need to get an idea of how many people to expect, so please let us know
you are coming. Likewise if you need a place to stay in Berlin just
before or after the meeting, please email us at: intersquatberlin@riseup.net

Keep an eye on the blog for up to date info: http://interspace.blogsport.de/

See you in May!

Press release Demonstration April 5th

On Saturday the 5th of April there will be a demonstration in Amsterdam as a kick-off for the squatting actiondays on the 11th and 12th of April which take place all over the world. The demonstration will march through the Amsterdam city centre to raise awareness about the importance of autonomy and free spaces.

poster demonstration 5th of april 2008

Social centres form the logistic and social backbone of a political a-parliamentarian opposition; they also provide space for all kinds of anti-commercial and culturally alternative activities. The last years have shown a heavy attack against these structures by the capitalist establishment.

All over Europe,
repressive agendas are being pushed by governments. For us the reason behind this is clear. The political elite tries to destroy the foundation of the non-conformist part of the population.

We are on the streets because we claim the autonomy over our lives. We want spaces free of oppression, hierarchy and authority; an environment that is actively fighting racism, sexism, classism, nationalism and fascism. We want spaces free from the domination of capital and the mechanisms of labour. Only the abolition of the logistics of the free market such as competition and wage-slavery will create an atmosphere where people can engage on a basis of infinity and solidarity allowing them to work collectively and voluntarily.

This is what we fight for and we are not willing to compromise our ideas nor will we settle for any less. Join us on the 5th of April 3pm Spui, Amsterdam.

Persbericht Demonstratie 5 April
