Op 26 november 2010 vind de eerste strafrechtzaak op grond van de "Wet kraken en leegstand" plaats. De arrestanten van de ontruiming van het KPN-gebouw op de Koningin Wilhelminalaan te Utrecht, moeten als eerste verdachten voor de rechter verschijnen op grond van het nieuwe wetsartikel 138a. Om deze dag niet ongemerkt voorbij te laten gaan roepen wij iedereen die sympathiseert met de aangeklaagden op om op 26 november om 12:00 uur te verzamelen op het Vrouwe Justitiaplein in Utrecht, voor een demonstratie. Voorafgaand aan de demonstratie zal er mogelijkheid zijn om vanaf 09:00 uur de rechtszaak te volgen op de publieke tribune of buiten op het plein.




Op 1 oktober 2010, is de nieuwe wet "Kraken en Leegstand" in werking getreden. Hiermee wordt het kraken van een leegstand gebouw verboden. Ondanks veel verzet van niet alleen krakers, maar onder andere ook door de Raad van State, de Vereniging Nederlandse Gemeenten (VNG), de culturele sector en zelfs de Raad van Kerken, heeft de politiek toch besloten om deze misdadige wet aan te nemen.

Omdat door het verbieden van kraken de leegstand en woningnood niet word opgelost, is er 1 november een pand aan de Koningin Wilhelminalaan te Utrecht bezet. Dit voormalig KPN-pand staat al lange tijd leeg en is niet meer in gebruik sinds 90 studenten gedwongen hun woning eind 2009 moesten verlaten. De studenten moesten op last van de brandweer vertrekken, omdat de eigenaar weigerde geld te investeren om het pand te laten voldoen aan de brandveiligheidseisen.

De dag na de bezetting is het pand in opdracht van Burgemeester Wolfsen, in overleg met de lokale driehoek, op hardhandige wijze ontruimd. Met veel machtsvertoon van de politie werd het pand onterecht en onaangekondigd ontruimd. Bij deze ontruiming werden 17 mensen gearresteerd, waaronder zelfs meerdere passanten die niks met de ontruiming te maken hadden. Op vrijdag 26 november om 9:00 uur zullen 8 van deze arrestanten voor de rechter moeten verschijnen. Zij worden als eerste personen in Nederland vervolgd voor het overtreden van artikel 138a Sr.

Deze dag kunnen wij natuurlijk niet ongemerkt voorbij laten gaan, en wij willen deze dag dan ook aangrijpen om onze woede en onvrede over de nieuwe wet te uiten.

Om de arrestanten een hart onder te riem steken en om ons ongenoegen te laten blijken, roepen wij iedereen op om op 26 november om 12:00 uur te verzamelen op het Vrouwe Justitiaplein in Utrecht, voor een demonstratie vóór kraken en in solidariteit met hen die voor de rechter moeten verschijnen.

Woningnood en leegstand worden niet opgelost met holle wetten, deze worden opgelost met directe actie. WET OF GEEN WET, KRAKEN GAAT DOOR!!

Tomorrow the verdict will be announced in the trial against the two

*Why Stine and Tannie?*
CJA organised several non-violent civil disobedience protests during the
climate summit in Copenhagen last year, including the "Reclaim Power
- Push
for Climate Justice" on16th of December. Stine Gry and Tannie were the
public faces of the movement. Now they stand accused of being
organisers and
instigators of violence and vandalism.

Several hundred people were arrested in relation to the action, but
none of
these have since been accused of anything illegal – only the
spokespersons.

It is evident that Stine Gry and Tannie Nyboe were charged because they
acted as the public faces of CJA. To accuse the spokespersons is a
disturbing way of trying to silence the voices, which have a critical
opinion towards the international climate negotiations. It is a way of
frightening people from using their right to protest and organise
politically.

*About Reclaim Power*
The purpose of the "Reclaim Power" demonstration was to have a public
assembly. Here protesters from the outside and accredited
participators from
the Bella Center, were to create a platform for the people and
groups mostly
affected by the climate change. Therefore the same people who were
not heard
in the official negotiations.

Reclaim Power was a non-violent demonstration and the purpose was
never to
achieve confrontation with the police. CJA has spoken openly about this
during the whole process, both in the media and in dialogue-meetings
with
the police.

Vandana Shiva was in the Netherlands

I can not believe that we missed the visit of one of the most amazing activist in Amsterdam :(

This past Monday and Tuesday nights Vandana spoke at two places in the Netherlands, first in Zeist (near Utrecht) and then here in Amsterdam.  Wow, what an amazing woman.  She's a brilliant person, and very well spoken.  It was really a pleasure to hear her speak.  There are a number of videos on the Internet of her speaking, and if you've never heard her, I suggest having a look at some of these.

Top on her agenda at both venues was to discuss farmer suicides in the Indian Punjab region, the ongoing tragedy that's one of the most serious in modern history.  This combined with the fact that of the roughly 1 billion people in the world today who are hungry, half or 500 million work in the food production and preparation industries.  There is really something messed up in the priorities of today's world if the people who give us our food are so poor.

Vandana is very good with facts and statistics, and I took several pages of notes.  She discussed things like GMOs, patents, world trade issues and human rights.  Most people who are regular readers of this blog will have heard a lot of these things before either here or elsewhere, so I won't cover them now.  I'll probably mention some in future posts, and indeed some are so important they deserve an entire post to themselves.

She took a few shots at the Netherlands too.  For example making fun of the new government's decision to eliminate the Environmental Ministry, or the fact that the amount of land equivalent to roughly 3 times the size of the Netherlands is used outside the country to grow the soy and grains necessary to feed the animals here.  She mentioned the Dutch were involved in intercepting ships at sea transporting generic (so-called 'counterfeit') medicines from India to other countries.

Zeist

The symposium in Zeist was really very interesting, not just because of Vandana herself, but by who attended and how it was organized.

When Tom Wagner visited last year I briefly entertained the possibility of trying to organize something for him here, but the community of people who might be interested in attending something like that is so disorganized and everyone has their own opinions and alliances, that I quickly decided getting a group of people together here would be impossible.  I've approached some of these people in the past for various reasons, and it nearly always happens that we quickly decide we don't have anything in common and go our own ways.  Part of the problem too is many people in the Netherlands don't like having anything to do with people from other countries, which of course to most of us is a strange concept.  It's a fact for example that I have almost no regular readers of this blog in the Netherlands.  On any given month I might only have 5 or 10 local readers, but 10,000+ from other countries.

What was interesting was no one name seemed to be associated with organizing the visit by Vandana Shiva or the symposium, rather it was a consortium of mostly large businesses and organizations.  No expense was spared, and quite a lot of money was spent on it all.  As well as paying for Vandana Shiva's visit, they served us dinner cooked from organic and locally sourced ingredients, local organic fruit juices, organic wines.  The costs we all paid to attend did not cover all their expenses, that's for sure.

A very broad range of people attended, including at least one identifiable representative of a Monsanto owned seed company.  There was at least one academic from the University of Wageningen.  The symposium itself was hosted after hours in a bank lobby, and there were a number of venture capitalists and investment companies present.  There were farmers and plant breeders.  There was one very passionate grower of organic flower bulbs.  There was a member of the EU Parliament.  It was a bit of a funny situation because when we registered, we had to state our affiliations, and they printed this on our name tags.  Some people were walking around with the title 'consumer' or 'gardener'.

Everyone was there to talk very seriously about the future of agriculture in the Netherlands and the world.  There were some very heated debates!

Towards the end the question was posed to the panel and the audience, if you had 10 million euros to fix agriculture, how would you spend it, and it's clear a number of people were looking to that question for real ideas to be implemented.  There weren't really a lot of clear answers to that question however.

The following evening in Amsterdam Vandana had a very good answer when she was asked where she would like to see more money spent.  She suggested school gardens and community gardens.  She offered the challenge that in the next decade we should not let a single small farmer fail, and money should be spent to that end.

Amsterdam

Vandana's talk in Amsterdam was of course also fantastic, but the venue was a little lacking.  First Vandana gave her talk, then someone from the University of Wageningen gave a presentation that essentially promoted modern agriculture.  Afterwards, there was supposed to be a debate between the two.

Vandana's talk was in English, and the other person spoke in Dutch.  The debate was supposed to be in English.  There was really a lot of language conflict.  At one point there was a brief discussion in Dutch, Vandana asked for a translation, and she was told it was too typically Dutch and she wouldn't understand.  I think that was very rude, and it left Vandana in a position where she may have felt people were telling secrets around her.

What this all meant was too much of my evening was taken up by a presentation promoting the Green Revolution, and the debate that followed was too unfocused.  I think Vandana ended up being slightly insulted.

The talk was held in a place called De Rode Hoed or 'The Red Hat'.  Vandana picked up on the name and mentioned it was also the name for open source software.

Op 22 november hield de AAGU (Anarchistische Antideportatie Groep Utrecht) een demonstratie van de rechtbank op het Vrouwe Justitiaplein naar het kantoor van de IND (Immigratie en Naturalisatie Dienst) aan de Bergstraat, in Utrecht.
In de rechtbank dienden twee zaken tegen de AAGU uit 2008 en 2009, respectievelijk een bezetting van het dak van het detentiecentrum Kamp Zeist en een bezetting van het Kennis en Leercentrum van de IND.

AAGU laat zich niet veroordelen en heeft daarom de zitting niet bijgewoond. Wij verklaren de IND moreel failliet!

On Tuesday November 23, 2010, the conference 'Biodiversity: Opportinuties for a new economy' took place at Artis in Amsterdam. ASEED Europe made a picketline to protest biopiracy and patenting parts of nature. "Big multinationals that make business with biodiversity, that always boils down to privatising parts of it, for profit," says Linda Coenen of ASEED. "But the conference does not quiestion the idea of reducing nature to a commodity and the societal consequences that has." ASEED handed out a pamphlet with this message to the 100 conference participants. Many expressed understanding for the criticism and shared our concerns.  The conference mainly focusses on HOW industry can get started with biodiversity. ASEED has serious doubts about this approach. Biodiversity and traditional uses are reduced to economic assets without questioning the desirability of this development. "Large multinational companies making money on biodiversity, that always turns out to patenting: the appropriation of pieces of nature," says Linda Coenen of ASEED. "The word patenting is not mentioned at all and criticism was put away in separate debate on Monday night instead of confronting the delegates from industry with it."  With patents knowledge and plants are monopolized and made inaccessible for others. This tends to decrease biodiversity, and foodsecurity as well. That is not only happening in the South but also in Europe. The patenting of agricultural crops is a problem for plant breeding and traditional farming practices like seed saving. A SEED opposes patents on life and feels that natural resources - from seeds to genes to medicine - should remain freely available for everyone. End of biopiracy not in sight For years companies have been exploiting the absence of international rules on the use of genetic resources and the protection of indigenous groups. The outcome of the recent UN conference on Biodiversity this may finally change. The objective is to force companies in the future to make agreements with local communities, before they use flora and fauna to develop products. [1] This looks like a step in the right direction, but according to ASEED it remains difficult to bring into practice. For example, applications or characteristics of genetic material are ften used in more than one community, so with whom will an interested company then agreements on sharing the proceeds? Moreover, not all communities or indigenous peoples recognized by their own government. And who will monitor the implementation and fair application of the Convention? Rights of indigenous peoples are already often violated for many industrial practices. Finally, some key players are not co-operating, including the United States, home to many companies that are guilty of biopiracy. EU: Stop the monopolization of food crops Also in Europe privatisation of parts of nature is starting to cause problems. We are talking about food crops. The big seed companies are increasingly patenting plants and plant characteristics. Thus they make work for smaller breeders impossible and push them out of the market. Furthermore, their lobby aims at banning all non-commercial seeds for agricultural crops, now that the EU is reviewing the existing legislation on seeds, bowing to the wishes of the seed giants. This poses a further threat to the diversity of agricultural crops and food security. Saatgutkampagne set up an international protests against this through a petition directed at the EU. ASEED supports this campaign. In April, ASEED published the brochure "You will reap what you sow" on monopolization of seeds [4]. Zwarte Piet. Daarin komt Avelino aan het woord, die vindt dat Zwarte Piet een
karikatuur van zwarte mensen is en daarom moet verdwijnen. "Sinterklaas en
zijn Zwarte Pieten zorgen voor een verkeerde beeldvorming onder kinderen en
herinneren ons op een verkeerde manier aan de slavernij", stelt hij.

10 december: discussie over democratie in de vakbond – alle macht aan de leden?

Schreeuwen om cultuur

Op zaterdag 20 november vond een belangrijke manifestatie van protest plaats:
"Nederland schreeuwt om cultuur". In een hele reeks steden gingen grote
aantallen bezorgde en boze mensen de straat op, om te protesteren tegen de
grove bezuinigingen die het bruine kabinet op de kunstsector loslaat.

Volgende week weer staking bij TNT

Vandaag hebben zo'n achtduizend TNT-arbeiders geprotesteerd bij hun
hoofdkantoor in Den Haag. De 160 bussen die de bond had ingezet, waren
onvoldoende om alle stakers naar de actie te brengen. Op de manifestatie werd
aangekondigd dat er volgende week, op donderdag 25 en vrijdag 26 november,

Sluit je aan bij de campagne van en voor huishoudelijk werkers!

In duizenden Nederlandse huishoudens wordt schoongemaakt en voor ouderen en
kinderen gezorgd door huishoudelijk werkers, vaak migranten, die nauwelijks
rechten hebben en bloot staan aan uitbuiting. Al langere tijd proberen ze
zelforganisaties op te zetten om samen sterk te worden en respect, erkenning
en werkvergunningen af te dwingen. FNV Bondgenoten ondersteunt hen inmiddels
bij deze strijd. De georganiseerde domestic workers roepen iedereen op om hun
campagne te ondersteunen.

25 november: lezing over het gebruik van raciale constructies in de
gezondheidszorg

"Zwart-Surinaams", "Autochtoon Nederlands", "Etnisch niet-blank",
"Niet-westers allochtoon", "Mediterraans Turks/Marokkaans". In
gezondheidsonderzoek en zorgbeleid wordt steeds vaker etniciteit behandeld als
een relevante factor. Maar wie goed kijkt naar het gebruik van zulke raciale
en etnische categorieën in de zorg en in medisch onderzoek, die ziet al snel
dat dit geen objectieve relevante biologische indelingen zijn. Het gaat om
specifieke contextuele sociale constructies. Etnische classificaties en het
gebruik daarvan zijn geen producten van "objectieve" wetenschap, maar ingebed
in politiek, geschiedenis en maatschappij.

Klacht van VluchtelingenWerk over inburgeringsplicht niet principieel

De overheid stelt "onredelijke eisen" aan de gezinshereniging van migranten.
Zo wordt het honderden nieuwe Nederlanders onmogelijk gemaakt om hun partner
en kinderen te laten overkomen. Aldus VluchtelingenWerk, dat op 12 november
bij de Europese Commissie een klacht heeft ingediend over de Wet Inburgering
Buitenland (WIB). Daarbij vecht men overigens niet het principe van de
inburgeringsplicht aan.
