In 2 days, African leaders could vote to withdraw from the International Criminal Court, crippling one of the world's best hopes for confronting genocide and crimes against humanity. In just 2 days' time, African leaders could kill off a great institution, leaving the world a more dangerous place. 

The International Criminal Court (ICC) is the world's first and only global court to adjudicate crimes against humanity. But leaders of Sudan and Kenya, who have inflicted terror and fear across their countries, are trying to drag Africa out of the ICC, allowing them the freedom to kill, rape, and inspire hatred without consequences.

In my years of work, life and travel, the fight for justice has been a long and arduous one. I have seen the very worst in Darfur and Rwanda, but also the very best with the reconciliation in South Africa. During this journey, I have seen great gains made that protect the weak from the strong and give us all hope. The ICC is one of these beacons of hope.

This threat to the ICC started precisely because the court was doing its job. It charged Kenya's Deputy President for killing people who rallied against him during an election and Sudan's President for murdering women and children in Darfur. Now Kenya and Sudan are lobbying all of Africa to pull out of the court and destroy its chance of success. 

But in Darfur, Congo, Cote D'Ivoire and Kenya, the ICC has played a key role in bringing hope to those terrified by the armies, militias and madmen that have waged war against the innocent. It's a light in the darkness that cannot be allowed to go out. 

The main argument by some leaders with a guilty conscience is that the ICC is a Western witch-hunt as most of the investigations have happened in Africa. But this couldn't be further from the truth. This was an institution that was created by 20 African countries, 5 of the court's 18 judges are African and the chief prosecutor is African. 

Friday is a key judgement day. Will our African leaders stand on the side of justice or injustice? With survivors and fallen victims or with tyrants and oppressors? This is the moment to choose. Het waren en zijn nog steeds bewogen dagen en we hebben ook ditmaal weer op brede steun vanuit de samenleving mogen rekenen. Daarom willen wij hier iedereen bedanken die ons een helpende hand heeft toegestoken:

We willen OT301 bedanken dat wij daar een nacht hebben mogen verblijven en het veganistische restaurant 'De Peper' omdat ze tijdens ons verblijf in de oude filmacademie ons hebben voorzien van koffie, thee en een heerlijk ontbijt.

We willen de mensen van het W.G terrein bedanken voor hun gastvrijheid en lunch.

We willen de raad van kerken bedanken dat zij een back-up plan voor drie dagen opvang voor ons hebben georganiseerd. We hebben uiteindelijk alleen in 'De Bron' in Watergraafsmeer overnacht en zij hebben ons ook een heerlijk ontbijt aangeboden.

We willen de buurtbewoners uit Oost bedanken voor het brengen van beddengoed

We willen De diaconie en de Hebron (Noorderkerk) bedanken voor het opvangen van de mensen die ziek zijn.

We willen we het Wereldhuis bedanken voor de fantastische lunch die zij ons aanboden.

We willen Rampenplan bedanken voor het verzorgen van het avondeten, al drie dagen in een rij.

We willen het Rode kruis bedanken voor het brengen van dekens en tandenborstels

En we willen de krakers bedanken dat ze voor ons een gebouw hebben bezet en op deze manier er voor hebben gezorgd dat we weer voor even een dak boven ons hoofd hebben.

Dear amazing community, I often get asked by Avaazers, "what happens after I sign a petition?" And the truth is, a HECK of a lot! Every Avaaz campaign springs from a massive global mandate, and then zeroes in on the best way for our voices to win. Here's just two of our victories from the last few weeks: Remember when 2 million of us came together to stop the flogging of a 15-year old rape victim in the Maldives? Her sentence has been quashed! Here's what our team did to win: Our ads threatened the profits of officials who owned parts of the tourism industry Spoke for hours with the Maldivian Attorney-General and Ministers and emailed the President at his personal account. Commissioned opinion polls showing massive support for reforms to protect girls. And wrote an Op-Ed in a major national paper. Persuaded a top Islamic scholar to speak out against flogging. Threatened to run an ad (right) in tourism publications, affecting the country's major industry. Visited the Maldives and the location where the girl was held, pressing officials directly. Ahmed Shaheed, former Foreign Minister of the Maldives said "The Avaaz contribution was the spearhead of the campaign to overturn the flogging sentence; a petition signed by millions, a country visit, a public opinion survey, and persistent follow-up all proved irresistible." Another example: Remember how almost 2 million of us rallied to stop the Maasai tribe in Tanzania from being kicked off their land for a hunting reserve? Last week, the Prime Minister announced they could stay! The petition provided a powerful basis for what the team did next: Maasai women gather to protest the eviction. Photo by Jason Patinkin Got CNN and the Guardian to visit the Maasai and break the wider story to the world. Advised Maasai elders on their campaigning strategy. Flooded Ministers and the President with messages -- forcing debate in cabinet and Parliament. Ran a hard hitting newspaper ad in an influential paper which publicly shamed the government. Persuaded diplomats worldwide to raise the issue -- embarrassing the government. Financially supported Maasai elders to travel to the capital where they gathered to 'occupy' land outside of the Prime Minister's office for weeks, refusing to leave until he met them. Gordon Brown said: "A million dollars has been raised via the brilliant Avaaz.org, in just a few days." Key Brazilian Senator joins Avaaz "open vote" naked protest sending a clear message: "we have nothing to hide" The victory belongs to the Maasai people, but our community helped them win by making this a global issue the government could no longer ignore. This hopefully ends a 20 year land battle!! Of course, our community does a LOT more than petitions. Last week, we raised a $1 million challenge grant in a few days to donor governments to put Syrian refugee kids in school. At a UN meeting, I was able to put a cheque on the table and issue the challenge on behalf of over 40,000 Avaaz donors. UN Education Envoy Gordon Brown, who chaired the meeting, called our community's effort a "magnificent and impactful intervention" in getting other governments to give! And often it's not the Avaaz team but our community that does the direct lobbying. For example in Brazil, we're inches away from winning a massive fight to end the shady practice of 'secret voting' in the Congress. Our huge push helped win the vote in the lower house and right now, Senators' telephones are ringing off the hook as Avaaz members across Brazil use our online calling tool to directly tell them to stop this corruption -- experts say a win is likely in days! It's this unique magic mix between a gigantic and spirited community of citizens able to speak out, donate, and lobby, and a small team of top notch advocates able to take smart, strategic actions at the highest level with democratic legitimacy, that makes our campaigns increasingly unstoppable. If we keep believing in each other, and growing in size and in commitment, there's no limit to the good we can do in the world. Gemeenten zetten niet alleen dwangarbeid in om werklozen op te voeden tot
brave volgzame burgers die de belangen van de BV Nederland dienen.
Bijstandsgerechtigden die zijn gebrandmerkt tot "niet-willers", krijgen ook
nog eens dwangtherapie opgelegd. Wie weigert om onder leiding van een
zielenknijper zijn veronderstelde ongemotiveerde gedrag te veranderen,

Soedan: tegen hogere brandstofprijzen, tegen een repressief bewind

In Soedan begon op maandag 23 september een reeks demonstraties tegen een
grote verhoging van de brandstofprijzen. De betogingen groeiden al snel uit
tot een rechtstreeks protest tegen het bewind van president Omar al-Bashir.
Met stevige repressie probeert de staat de protesten neer te slaan. Of het
bewind daarin gaat slagen, is nog de vraag. Het dodental stond eind vorige

Mythe rond zeeschurk Maarten Tromp valt niet meer op te kalefateren

Op 2 oktober wordt in de Oude Kerk in Delft het gerestaureerde grafmonument
van zeeschurk Maarten Tromp onthuld. De Rijksgebouwendienst heeft het uit 1658
stammende en door de tand des tijds danig aangetaste praalgraf weer
opgekalefaterd. Maar gedenktekens voor koloniale vechtersbazen als Tromp, Piet
Hein, Witte de With, Michiel de Ruyter en Jan Pieterszoon Coen dienen juist te
worden vervangen door eerbewijzen voor de slachtoffers van het Nederlandse

10 oktober, Utrecht: debat over de PVV en de Gouden Dageraad

Op 10 oktober organiseren de Kritische Studenten Utrecht een debatbijeenkomst
onder het motto "Fascisme kun je niet eten. De eeuwige terugkeer van fascisme
in tijden van crisis". De discussie zal onder meer gaan over de PVV van Geert
Wilders en de Gouden Dageraad in Griekenland. Beide partijen zaaien haat en
geweld met hun racistische zondebokpolitiek. Debat. Donderdag 10 oktober,
